Britain targets 3 medals at Sochi Winter Olympics

London, Jan 17 (IANS) UK Sport, the nation’s high-performance sports agency, has revealed that its goal is winning at least three medals at the upcoming Sochi Winter Olympic.

UK Sport said Thursday that if achieved, the tally would represent Britain’s best winter Olympic performance in 20 years, reports Xinhua.

UK Sport CEO Liz Nicholl said: “Realising our goal of winning at least three Olympic and at least two Paralympic medals would represent our best combined winter performance since Lillehammer 1994, and equal our best Olympic performance since 1936.

“If achieved, this would demonstrate the fantastic momentum created by London 2012, where additional investment and focus on developing our high performance system has benefited summer and winter sports alike.”

Mike Hay, Team GB Chef de Mission, said: “We view the target that has been announced by UK Sport as a vote of confidence. It is reflection of the growth we are seeing in competitive strength and depth across many of our winter sports.”

Britain won only one medal at each of the past two Games, with Amy Williams’s skeleton gold in Vancouver four years ago, the country’s first individual gold at a Winter Games for 30 years.
