Nate Tibbetts was born on May 15, 1977, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He is an American basketball coach and is currently the head coach of the Phoenix Mercury. He was born to Fred Tibbetts, a girls’ basketball coach, and Micki Tibbetts. He is married to Lyndsay, and they have twin daughters, Londyn and Jordyn. Before becoming the head coach of the Mercury in 2024, Tibbetts was the head coach of two teams: the Sioux Falls Skyforce from 2007 to 2009, and the Oklahoma City Blue from 2009 to 2011. Tibbetts was the highest-paid coach in WNBA history in the year 2023.
Nate Tibbetts’s College
Nate Tibbetts attended the University of South Dakota in 1996 and played for the South Dakota Coyotes Men's Basketball Team as their point guard. He was red-shirted in his first year and graduated in 2001.
Tibbetts helped his team win the North Central Conference Title three consecutively in a row in 1998-1999, 1999-2000, and 2000-2001 seasons, coached by Coach Boots. He had seven points, 12 assists, and six steals against Minnesota State, on Dec 8, 2000, and 15 points, 10 assists, three steals and a blocked shot, the following night in the North Central Conference.
He was named the Co-Player of the Week in December 2000. The Phoenix Mercury’s head coach, Tibbetts was the all-time assist leader in the 88-year history of the NCC, with a total of 465 assists and number two all-time for the Coyotes in steals, during his collegiate career. He was honoured with the All-NCC honours in 2001 and was named to the NCC All-Tournament Team. In 2014, he was inducted into the Coyote Sports Hall of Fame. He ended his college career with 572 points, 321 rebounds, and shooting 55 percent from the field, in 112 games.

Nate Tibbetts attended a high school in Jefferson, South Dakota, and transferred to Roosevelt High School in Sioux Falls for his junior season. Dave Dummermuth was his high school coach, and Bob White was his assistant. During his senior season, he led his team, Roosevelt, to a third-place finish in the state tournament.
