Sushil Kumar has made it to the final of the Men’s 66 Kg Freestyle Wrestling, beating Akzhurek Tanatarov of Kazakhstan 3-1 after the Central Asian seemed to have the game in his grasp.
In a game that was as entertaining as at was nail-biting, Kumar started very strongly and raced into a three-point lead in the first round.
But Tanatarov was not going to be an easy opponent to contend with, and he showed that in the second half, as he picked up three points of his own.
In a game similar to the other two Kumar featured in today, the third round would decide who would triumph.
The first round saw Tanatarov race into a 3-1 lead, and it looked like Indian hearts would be broken again, as the 29-year-old Delhiite would be forced to settle for another Bronze.
But Sushil had other ideas. A magnificent over-the-shoulder takedown saw him pick up five points.
The Kazakh would end up worse for wear, splitting his ear as he fell to the floor.
The result means that Sushil Kumar goes through to the final to face Tatsuhiro Yonemitsu of Japan. Tanatarov left the field in tears as he contemplated what could’ve been.
