Do NOT bring back the nWo...again

In case you haven’t been following this story online, there are rumors going around that WWE is looking to bring back the New World Order (nWo) once again. You may remember that this once tried before in 2002, as the original three members of the group- Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall- returned to the WWE and attempted to revive a concept that had been beaten into the ground prior to WCW’s demise. The group grew to include former members such as The Big Show and X-Pac, as well as men who had never once been affiliated with the group, such as Booker T and Shawn Michaels. Needless to say, it was a colossal failure, and fortunately ended before it went on to long.

Now rumor has it the group will be returning once again. Key word is “rumor”, however as the only one stating this will happen is Kevin Nash. Nash has recently taken to Twitter, demanding the group come back for one more run, with current WWE Champion CM Punk heading the group, Nash as an enforcer and a few other unnamed stars. Fortunately, thus far, the only one taking any stock in this is Nash himself. Punk has yet to respond to Nash asking him to lead the new group, and likely never will, as he probably knows just like everyone else how bad of an idea it is.

Basically, this is Nash trying to stay relevant during a time in which no one cares about him anymore, not to mention the fact that he seems to refuse to accept that his career is over. If you saw his performances last year, not to mention that he was actually removed from a match with Punk due to not being able to pass a physical, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

Where it gets even more obvious that Nash is grasping for straws is the inclusion of Punk in the new version of the group. While picking the current champion and one of the most over men in the company is not so strange, it’s the fact that this negates what Nash said about Punk prior to their planned feud (which never happened). Nash is famous for coining the phrase “vanilla midget” in regards to smaller wrestlers who supposedly lack charisma and talent, and originally coined it in regards to guys like Chris Jericho, Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit, three smaller guys who went on to do great things and make lots of money. When he returned to WWE last year for the feud with Punk, he began using the phrase again in regards to Punk, telling everyone he wasn’t sure about the feud because of “how small Punk is”. You can chalk this one up to jealousy, though, especially after Punk completely humiliated Nash during a war of words on an episode of RAW.

Reboots in wrestling almost never work, and in this particular case, it’s guaranteed to fail. The nWo has been rebooted numerous times, and another one featuring completely new talents isn’t going to change anything. I realize Nash is trying his hardest to stay relevant and keep his name/face out there, but time has passed him by. Punk has proven he doesn’t need the nWo to get himself over, while Nash has proven that he can’t get over without those three letters. It’s a no-win situation if it does happen, but fortunately, it doesn’t seem to be in the cards.

For now, at least.
