New Delhi, 16 May 2010: Indian team finished at the third position in the Greco Roman category of the Senior Asian Wrestling Championships on the final day here at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex in New Delhi. In the Freestyle Wrestling and the Female Wrestling the Indian team stood at fifth position in both the categories. The five day long event was being treated as a test event en-route to the XIX Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010 scheduled to be held in October later this year.
In the Greco Roman category India finished at third position with a total of 49 points. Korea topped the table with 56 points followed by China with 49 points (on the basis of the Gold medal). In the Free Style wrestling, Iran continued with its dominance by taking the top slot with 53 points. Kazakhstan stood at second position with 48 points followed by Korea with 46 points. The host had to satisfy at the fifth position with 37 points. In the Female Wrestling too India stood at fifth position with an overall point tally of 42. China stood at first followed by Jap and Kazakhstan with 65, 60 and 49 points respectively.
On the final day of the championship, in the Greco Roman style competition, in the 60 kg category, Chinese wrestler Sheng Jiang won the Gold medal by defeating Korean wrestler Woo Seoung Jae in three rounds of 1-0, 0-1 and 1-0. The Bronze medal was taken by Uzbek wrestler Jumashev Sanjar and Indian wrestler Ravinder Singh.
“It was a tough draw to start with. I took on the 2006 Asian Games Gold medallist, Sheng Jiang in the second round. I gave my best in all the three bouts. I am satisfied with my performance and looking forward for the World Championship, the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games to be played later this year.”, said Ravinder Singh after winning the Bronze medal.
In the 74 kg category Korean wrestler Park Jin Sung defeated Sa Renmandula from China in straight rounds of 4-0 and 1-0 to bag the Gold medal. The Bronze medal was taken by Iranian wrestler Mehdi Mohammadi and Uzbek wrestler M Vsevolod.
In the 96 kg category Iranian wrestler Babak Ghorbani defeated Zhai Ningchao from China by 3-0. Asembekov from Kazakhstan and Abdullaev Mumin from Uzbekistan had ton satisfy with Bronze medal.
In the five day long tournament the Indian team had 2 Gold, a Silver and 4 Bronze medals in its kitty.
