It has been a really sound and encouraging week for Indian sports. Not many a times do Indians become world champions in their respective fields. And this week we were witness to the crowning of a deserving world champion: none other than Olympic bronze medallist Sushil Kumar.
A sportsperson whose consistency has been terrific. He has repeatedly won the gold medal in the Commonwealth wrestling championships, a feat which largely gone unnoticed. But winning the Beijing bronze propelled hime to recognition. A deserving accolade for one of the finest Indian sportsman alive.
But controversies generally mar the sweet and joyous occasions in Indian Sports. This time it was the “controversial” Sports Minister M.S.Gill who took the attention away from the Haryana lad. With his disgraceful act of sending Coach Satpal out of the photo frame, he once again underlined the fact that ministers hardly know about their portfolio and conduct proceedings of their ministries without any emotions.
The thing which matters to them is a ministerial berth and not the specific ministry. His quote to the TV channels that “I Love sports too much to hurt anyone“ is as puzzling as the Rubik’s cube .
It is not the first time it happened with him. He earlier had failed to recognize Pullela Gopichand when he along with Saina Nehwal came to meet him. Not knowing sportsmen of the caliber of Pullela Gopichand and Satpal is a huge question mark on his capability to run the daily errands. However, it is time for focusing on positive things rather than conjuring negative vibes.
Another news which hogged the headlines all over the world was the Grand slam pairing of Aisam Ul Haq Quereshi and Rohan Bopanna who managed to reach the finals before falling at the final hurdle. But even after the defeat, both of them had some lovely things to say which choked the Bryans with emotions. A lovely sight rarely seen.
Sporting ties and rivalries between the two countries have been destroyed by our politicians who cannot stop the terrorists from entering our country but as a token gesture stops the sportspersons from Pakistan to come to India on pretext of security. From Indo-pak hockey ties to cricketing festivals , we miss all of them. May this pair go on to reach the heights of Lee-Hesh and even more.
