Day 12 of the inaugural Pro Wrestling League saw the Revanta Mumbai Garuda take on the Dilli Veer at the KD Jadhav Stadium in New Delhi.
It was a battle between top and bottom as the Mumbai side has won each of their three games, while Delhi have been winless in their campaign.
The opening bout of the matchup saw Mumbai’s Odikadze Elizbar face off against Gurpal Singh in the men’s 97 kg category. It was business as usual for the Georgian giant as he cruised to a 5-0 victory.
After leading the first round at 2-0, he doubled his lead soon after the break with a diving attack on Gurpal’s left leg. He did not allow his opponent to attack even once as he ran down the clock and pushed his side into the lead.
Next up was a family affair between two sisters as Mumbai’s Ritu Phogat took on the Veer’s Vinesh Phogat in the 48 kg category. The Delhi skipper put her team back into the fixture with a comfortable 8-0 victory.
Like the first bout, it ended 2-0 at the break, after which Vinesh garnered six more points to win against her younger sister. Ritu tried to be more aggressive in the second round, but her attacks were easily repelled by Vinesh. She made it 6-0 after a lightning reversal and then struck the final blow with a right ankle grab.
The Delhi side took the overall lead in the next bout as Dinesh Kumar fought back in the second round to defeat 2014 Nationals gold medalist Pardeep Kumar in the 74 kg category.
Pardeep went into the second round with a 0-2 lead but within 40 seconds, the Delhi grappler picked up five points in a row to take a three-point lead. Despite conceding a penalty point, Dinesh defended well and completed a 5-3 victory.
In the fourth bout, Nigerian Odunayo Adekuoroye brought the Garuda back into the match with an emphatic 10-0 victory. She was taking on reigning European champion Liliya Horishna in the 53 kg category and used her tall frame and reach to execute some deadly attacks and complete an easy victory.
She started off well by picking up her first points after just 30 seconds and ended the first round with a 6-0 advantage. She finished off the bout with four minutes left on the clock after taking a ten-point lead to win by technical fall.
The next bout was a very short affair as Giorgi Sakandelidze completed another 10-0 washout against a clueless Krishan Kumar in the 125 kg category clash. The Georgian notched up six points in the opening eight seconds and closed out the bout with his next sequence of moves as the clock stopped at just 47 seconds.
Mumbai Garuda sealed their fourth victory in a row as captain Adeline Gray notched up her team’s third consecutive 10-0 win in a row. It was the 69 kg category bout as Delhi’s Nikki had no chance against the reigning World Champion.
Gray dominated from the outset and took the decisive ten-point lead with a little over 40 seconds left in the first round.
In the final bout, the Garuda added salt to Delhi’s wounds with Amit Dhankar defeating Uzbekistan international Navruzov Ikhtiyor in the 65 kg clash. After a 2-2 stalemate in the first round, Dhankar displayed some brilliant attacking wrestling to come up trumps with a 9-7 scoreline.
For Mumbai, it was fourth win a row as they dominated proceedings and will have one eye on the semifinals already. As far as the Delhi side is concerned, they endured another embarrassing defeat in what has been a nightmarish first season.
