WWE Superstars Randy Orton and Alberto Del Rio are facing serious injuries which could force them out of the Royal Rumble event. While Alberto Del Rio was injured last week on Raw, Randy Orton was injured yesterday during this weeks Smackdown event at Indianapolis.
Alberto Del Rio:
Mexican superstar Alberto Del Rio suffered a groin injury during the 6-man tag team match which was held last week on Raw. Though it was initially considered to be a small niggle, subsequent tests revealed that Del Rio had indeed sustained a groin injury. He appeared on this week’s Raw informing us about his injury.
“We were able to look at an MRI, and it appears as though he has a groin injury that’s severe enough to require surgery. Fortunately for Alberto, the surgery is minimally invasive and the recovery time is usually four to six weeks.” Dr. Amann was quoted as saying on the WWE website.
Del Rio, who debuted in the WWE during the latter half of 2010, has been having a dream run so far in 2011. The man who believes in his destiny won the 2010 Royal Rumble, won the Money in the bank contract and successfully cashed in to become WWE Champion. He main evented Wrestlemania but lost in the World Heavyweight Championship match to Edge. He has held the WWE Championship twice and has been involved in feuds with Edge, John Cena and CM Punk during the course of this year. Though he has been blamed for not having good mic skills, his wrestling skills have come in for praise for many. With the road to wrestlemania set to kick off with the Royal Rumble next month, this injury forces Del Rio out for a period of 6 weeks which means that he might miss the Royal Rumble. But the WWE might use him at Royal Rumble, just for a night and put him back at rehab.
Randy Orton:
The Apex Predator of the WWE, Randy Orton has had serious neck and back injuries in the past. It seems that his back injury might have recurred yet again. The injury was discovered last week after Orton went through the table in a match with Wade Barrett. Hence, WWE has decided to pull out Orton from scheduled live events and Sheamus has replaced him in those matches. An angle was taped at this week’s Smackdown tapings which involved Wade Barrett and Orton in a falls count anywhere match, during which Orton gets injured. This was done to take him out of action for a few weeks, citing an injury. Regarding this recent development, Wade Barrett tweeted,
“Look, what happened at the taping was tragic. However, there are inherent risks in our profession. Play with fire, you get burned.”
Several reports indicate that Orton might be out of Wrestlemania, but those are premature. Orton is set to undergo a series of tests during this week and the results of those test will determine his fate. Another serious back injury might require yet another surgery which mean that he will miss Royal Rumble but will be back in time for Wrestlemania, which is just 93 days away.
With two of its main stars of Raw and Smackdown suffering from serious injuries at the same time, WWE is currently in a precarious situation. The creative writers are going to have a tough time while writing the storylines for the upcoming weeks leading up to the Royal Rumble.
