New Delhi - Two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar was felicitated by the people of Chandni Chowk here Saturday.
The event was held on the main road of the cycle market which led to a chaotic situation. Lack of proper organisation led Sushil being delayed almost by half an hour as he tried to make way onto the dais through the surging crowd.
Local MP and Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal, who was supposed to felicitate Sushil, also failed to make it.
Despite the disorder, the 29-year-old appreciated the crowd for honouring him and said: “I hope to do well in Rio de Janeiro. I have always been given a lot of honour here at Chandni Chowk. This is unique way to felicitate me.”
Sushil’s coach Satpal Singh and Wrestling Federation of India’s secretary general Raj Singh, who were present at the event, also congratulated the grappler, who won the silver medal at the recently concluded London Olympics in the 66kg freestyle wrestling event.
Sushil was given a garland made of currency notes amounting to Rs.51,000 and a gold medal by the Narsingh temple in the cycle market which he visited to seek blessings before going to Olympics.
