The good. The bad. The WWE

I am thirty six years old. It is Monday afternoon. I get a call from a buddy who wants to go shoot some pool. I am hyped to go until he says he wont be able to get out until eight thirty when he gets off work. My entire attitude changes. I have to tell him that I can’t make it and come up with some excuse because there is no way I am going to admit that the reason is Monday Night Raw. I have not missed a show since the beginning that I can recall. Granted, it isn’t like it was during the attitude era. It’s far more PG rated than I care for and the storylines are getting very dull. I can’t decide if its a lack of talent with the writing staff or if the storylines are about used up after so many years.

I get on the computer almost daily and look for matches on Youtube from the days of The Ultimate Warrior and Mr Perfect. WWE even has a computer based segment called “Are You Serious?” Yes, I watch this each week as well. I think the next step for WWE is to take it from there to an all out bloopers program. I think it would be a big seller. I also think an even bigger seller would be actual biographies of the more popular wrestlers. I’m not talking about the DVD’s they release on certain superstars but am referring to an actual biography from childhood to the rise and fall of each wrestler.

I have been debating submitting this article for over a month now, yet paused knowing the odds of it ever being seen was slim to none. I am not a professional writer by any means. As a matter of fact, this is my first ever since high school. However, I had some extra time on my hands and just finished watching a few segments on Bret Hart and thought to myself, why not? Like I said, I have been a fan of WWE as well as WCW since I was a small child and here I am thirty six years old, living check to check. I look at the guys in the WWE who risk it all just to have a little fun with this or that and think to myself, what an idiot. You see it all the time. Certain wrestlers suspended for substance abuse or whatever. We all have our demons, but some of us still know how to follow the law. Not so many of us are fortunate enough to make that kind of cash and be set for life.

Back to the subject at hand. I think I prefer the attitude era for its arrogance, technical wrestling rather than hit and kick scenarios we see every single match. I look at the guys like CM Punk and I respect the fact he is straight laced, if he is indeed just that. I look at the fact that a guy the size of Big Show really hasn’t got any wrestling talent but a body that makes up for it by slamming and pounding on people, which need I remind you, is not wrestling. I see people like John Cena and think, wow, he gets paid for that!

Regardless of my opinions of everyone’s WWE character, it’s the person behind the persona I want to point out. I think those guys like Cena and Punk and so on should be recognized not only with the WWE but with the other public who don’t watch. I think the guy who tries to ban wrestling from his hometown arena should know that his daughter suffering from leukemia was helped behind closed doors by the likes of those very same guys. The Make a Wish foundation is led by Cena. The anti bullying program is supported by most WWE entertainers and should be recognized as people rather than entertainers. The public, who don’t watch the shows, should know just what these guys are about.

Focus is not one of my strongpoints. I am sure you have all noticed I have been all over the place in my writing. I just got so much to say I guess I tried to squeeze it in. In ending this little vent session, I’d like to thank all of those involved with the WWE for not only the entertainment each week, but the way they represent themselves by helping others in various ways. I am in no way physically fit enough to ever be a wrestler, so millions will never come my way. However, my heart goes out to those who appreciate what those of us less fortunate do not have as they might. Keep up the good work WWE. Get the yawns out of the story lines and you’ll be back on track.
