Top 10 Talking Points: WWE Smackdown 10/2/2012

This week’s Smackdown, held at Tulsa, Oklahoma featured a singles match between Randy Orton and World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan as the main event. Besides this match, there were several other talking points about the show. Here are the top 10 talking points of WWE Smackdown 10/2/2012:

1. Sheamus vs Big Show at Wrestlemania 28?

For the first time ever, we had Sheamus kickstarting the show. He talked about bullying during his youth. He also spoke about how he has risen to the top of the WWE in such a short span, overcoming plenty of hurdles. He was interrupted by Barrett, Cody and Big Show. They all proclaimed that they will emerge out of Elimination Chamber as the World Heavyweight Champion. Big Show went a step further, proposing a Sheamus vs Big Show match at Wrestlemania 28. This was an apt segment to spotlight the best talents of Smackdown ahead of an important pay-per-view.

2. Tag-team match:

During the confrontation at the opening segement, Cody Rhodes and Wade Barrett insulted Big Show by highlighting his poor Wrestlemania record. This led to a brawl and hence a tag-team match between the teams of Sheamus & Big Show and Wade Barrett & Cody Rhodes was announced to take place later on, in the show. This match was actually good. It was slow, which is accepatable considering the presence of Big Show in the match. Sheamus and Big Show were the eventual winners at the end of this match. Cody and Barrett displayed great tag-team chemistry. It shows that they are working really hard to get noticed. The future is bright.

3. The Great Khali impressive in his Smackdown return:

On his first match on Smackdown after a brief hiatus, The Great Khali dominated his compatriot Jinder Mahal in a singles match. This is something that has been done already and it doesn’t make sense why they are rekindling this failed storyline again. With Jinder Mahal failing to deprive Khali of his Elimination Chamber slot, we may see the continuation of this feud in the coming weeks. Brace yourselves.

4. Tamina shows some competition for Beth Phoenix:

Alicia Fox was squashed by Beth Phoenix in a singles match. But when she tried to make a statement by attacking Alicia after the match, Tamina interfered. Tamina is being given a major push as a challenger for Beth Phoenix’s Divas Championship. Will these two muscular divas along with Kharma, resurrect the Divas division? Only time will tell.

5. John Laurinaitis’ expresses his excitement on retaining his job:

Michael Cold did a phone call interview with John Laurinaitis who has been retained as the General Manager of Raw by the board of directors. As expected, Johnny was super-excited on being retained. But my question is, why do this on Smackdown? It should have been held back till Raw.

6. Ted Dibiase get the better of Hunico:

Ted Dibiase got a quick roll-up victory over Hunico. But it has to be said that Ted Dibiase’s aggression was showcased in this match. This mid card feud has helped Ted Dibiase a lot more than it has done for Hunico. Dibiase has become relevant once again with his Dibiase Posse publicity. It’s glad to see that he’s back from obscurity and is here to stay.

7. Michael Cole snubs AJ

Michael Cole did an in-ring interview with Daniel Bryan’s girlfriend AJ. But even before AJ could start talking, Cole started to bash her and her boyfriend. Daniel Bryan came out and stated that he will prove everyone wrong at Elimination Chamber. This segment was absurd. Cole trashing Bryan wouldn’t help the case of Bryan being a heel currently.

8. Bryan tries to weasel out of his match against Randy Orton:

Throughout the show, on multiple occasion, Daniel Bryan tried to weasel his way out of his match with Randy Orton without much avail. He gave up after Teddy Long suggested that his title would be stripped if he doesn’t take part in the match. This isn’t the right way to portray a champion. It seems to be suggesting that Daniel Bryan is on the edge, all the time. They need to give him credibility which is the main factor lacking in this title reign of Daniel Bryan. He seems to be using his Vegan lifestyle to get as much heat as possible. And most of his matches do not have a clean ending. It is having a negative effect on Daniel Bryan as a World Heavyweight Champion.

9. The tussle between Randy Orton and Daniel Bryan:

We had yet another inconsequential ending to a Daniel Bryan match. Bryan and Orton took the fight to each other but Big show’s interference proved to be the dampener. Somehow, Daniel Bryan was able to escape from this brawl. He weaseled out yet again, while Big Show and Randy Orton were busy hurting each other.

10. What happened to Drew McIntyre and Brodus Clay?

Contrary to the past few weeks, we did not get to see neither Brodus Clay nor Drew McIntyre in this episode of WWE Smackdown. They did not even mention reasons for their absence. Does this mean that Drew McIntyre is fired and Brodus Clay has gone back to planet Funk? Continuation is the key to a entertaining product. Smackdown lacked continuation but it did well to build the hype for the Smackdown Elimination Chamber match.
