I was planning on writing my post WWE Night of Champions recap right after the pay-per-view on Sunday night, but I was too pissed off at the entire production. It was infuriating seeing John Cena AGAIN win the WWE championship. It didn’t piss me off that Cena won again (we’ve come to expect it), but that he rolled through a legitimate up and coming talent in doing so (Alberto Del Rio). The event was somewhat saved by Mark Henry finally getting his “moment” in winning the world heavyweight title from Randy Orton, but I couldn’t enjoy Henry’s push because of Cena. The number of pay-per-views Cena has ruined for fans like myself doubles his number of Flair like title reigns.
For me, however, the night was all about the main event. Triple H vs the best in the world, CM Punk. If Punk won, Mrs. Stephanie McMahon would no longer be the COO of the company. The result of the match wasn’t imperative, but I wanted to see how the WWE would handle the Punk storyline. Punk gave the company an adrenaline shot that every fan over the age of 12 needed when he delivered the shoot heard across the wrestling business before Money in the Bank.
Sadly, since the night Punk “left the company” with the WWE title, they have completely blown the opportunity to regain the mainstream fan base because of their shortsighted “Cena is everything” thinking.
It was borderline retarded to bring the useless Kevin Nash in at SummerSlam to cost Punk the WWE title after Triple H counted Cena down despite Cena’s leg being on the bottom rope. Why not keep the belt on Punk and slowly build the Punk-HHH storyline for the Survivor Series at Madison Square Garden? Why the rush to push Del Rio if they were going to have Super Cena beat him inevitably anyway? It’s horrible writing, and it’s brought everything that Punk ranted about back to the forefront when the focus should be on the mini renaissance that Punk was set to give them.
That’s what has me so pissed off tonight. Triple H beat Punk at Night of Champions despite The Miz, R-Truth, & Nash all getting involved at different points in the match. This should have been the night where Punk & Cena culminated their rivalry and led into the Triple H-Punk feud. If they were sooooooo desperate to put the belt on Cena, have Triple H cost him and let Vince’s boy toy become the 273rd time champ in a 9 year span. We know that’s what you have to have, Vince. What would the boss do if his boy didn’t have the belt for 3 months?
Either way, they have botched Punk’s moment and ruined what was becoming the reality era. Now, Punk will battle Cenanuff & Del Rio at hell in the Cell. Triple threat matches suck, always have. You can’t build a quality storyline when 3 guys are involved. Punk should be the top attraction in the business right now. He should be the guy headlining the company (like The Rock & Austin each did once their popularity reached an epic level), not Cena. Cena is established, and has his WrestleMania match set with The Rock. Punk, meanwhile, will get lost in the shuffle as the Cena Show rolls on.
This shows the pussification of the WWE. They had the mainstream/old school fans back on board with Punk’s shoot & Money in the Bank win, but have turned it all PG since. It’s tough to keep a storyline going for too long, but the Punk/Cena/Del Rio/Triple H thing seemed so rushed. We got tired of the nWo and every other faction because they were at the forefront for years. Punk wasn’t even given the chance to take the lead until the Survivor Series for Christ’s sake. There was a real opportunity to push Punk to the elite level that Cena was placed on from ’05 to the present, but they made it all commercialized & WWE. Lame. If you see ratings and pay-per-view buys decline as the months progress, you’ll know the reason why. If Punk wants to “make this shit fun again,” he’ll have to keep doing things the non WWE way.
