In addition to CM Punk defending his WWE Championship against John Cena and Sheamus defending the World Heavyweight Championship against Alberto Del Rio at Night of Champions, we have our third official championship match announced. The current WWE Divas Champion Layla will defend her title against the new #1 contender, Kaitlyn.
Earlier this month, there was a battle royal on RAW to determine a new #1 contender to the Divas title. After the rest of the competition had been eliminated, it was down to Kaitlyn and the former champion Eve Torres. In what some consider an upset, Kaitlyn ended up taking the match, clotheslining Torres to the floor and earning herself a championship match.
It was rumored that the match would take place at Night of Champions, and after tonight’s episode of Friday Night Smackdown!, it has been made official.
This will actually be Kaitlyn’s very first championship match of any kind, despite being with the company for nearly 3 years now. After winning season three of the old NXT, as part of her win, Kaitlyn was guaranteed a match for the Divas title down the road. However, it never happened. In fact, shortly after she won the contest, she was nearly dropped from television altogether, getting the occasional squash match (with her being on the losing end) or appearing in a backstage skit, but nothing more.
Although I can’t confirm this, it may have been due to lack of seasoning. By the time Kaitlyn had been called up for NXT, she had only had a handful of professional matches under her belt, only signing her WWE developmental deal a few months prior. In the NXT episodes, her lack of experience definitely showed, as she was extremely awkward in the ring, botching even the most basic of moves.
Fast forward a couple of years. Although Kaitlyn is still fairly green compared to some of the more seasoned divas such as Natalya or Beth Phoenix, she is light years ahead of where she was, and with more ring time, she is only going to get better from this point. Going into a championship match against Layla-someone who has had the same struggles-should be a good test for the diva, and it will be interesting to see how well this match turns out.
There have been rumors for a while now that Kaitlyn would be receiving a Divas title run, so NoC looks as good of a place to start as any. Vince McMahon was reportedly very impressed with her performance in the six-diva tag team match at Money in the Bank in June (also around when the championship rumors started), so we could see a new champion crowned in this one.
