In the only night of the year when every championship in the WWE is on the line, two championships changed hands while all others were defended successfully. WWE Night of Champions 2012 was held at The Garden in Boston, Massachusetts amid much fanfare but there was also a controversy as the main event was declared as a draw which enabled CM Punk to retain his WWE Championship.
John Bradshaw Layfield (JBL) joined Michael Cole on commentary, in place of Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler who is recuperating from a heart attack. Here are the results in brief:
Match 1: Pre-Show Battle Royal
Zack Ryder won a 16-man battle royal to become the No.1 contender for the United States Championship.
Match 2: Fatal 4-Way for the Intercontinental Championship
The Miz fended off the challenge from Cody Rhodes, Rey Mysterio and Sin Cara to extend his Intercontinental Championship reign.
Match 3: WWE Tag-Team Championship Match
The unconventional team of Kane and Daniel Bryan surprised one and all by beating R-Truth and Kofi Kingston to become the new Tag-Team Champions.
Match 4: United States Championship Match
Zack Ryder put up a good fight but was no match for Antonio Cesaro. Cesaro is still the United States Champion.
Match 5: Dolph Ziggler vs Randy Orton
Easily the best match of the night. Dolph Ziggler and Randy Orton put on a show for the masses. In the end, Orton got the better of Ziggler.
Match 6: Divas Championship Match
With the challenger Kaitlyn suffering an injury due to a controversial attack by an unknown person, Booker T chose Eve Torres to face the champion Layla in the championship match. Eve defeated Layla to become the new Divas Champion.
Match 7: World Heavyweight Championship Match
The brogue kick was reinstated by Booker T just before the start of the match and Sheamus used it to perfection to get the pinfall victory over Alberto Del Rio.
Match 8: WWE Championship Match
The main event ended in a draw as the shoulders of both men were on the mat for the three count, after John Cena hit a belly to belly suplex on CM Punk from the top rope. This result meant that CM Punk would extend his WWE Championship reign beyond the current tally of 302 days.
