One of the finest three-hour segments of professional wrestling thrilled the WWE Universe as Over the Limit proved to be equally exciting for the wrestlers and the fans alike. Here is what happened during the wonderful three hours:
1. John Cena def. The Miz (“I Quit!” match for the WWE Championship):
In what is becoming his trademark match of sorts, John Cena’s resilience proved to be too much for the challenger and his trusty associate, as The Champ came out on top in what was virtually a handicap match, and even a trick out of The Rock’s playbook could not get The Miz anywhere near the WWE Championship.
Being an I Quit match, there was nothing illegal about Alex Riley teaming up with The Miz on Cena, but the lion-heart champion would not utter those two words in spite of the diabolic punishment he was being put through. Seeing no way to make The Champ quit, The Miz tried to trick the referee by playing a recording of Cena saying the words “I Quit” on a cellphone. He almost succeeded, but unfortunately the ref saw through the cheap trick, and allowed the match to continue. However, this caused the champion to snap, and he unleashed hell on his two adversaries. A- Ri tasted woodwork in a hard way as he went through a table, and The Miz could not find any other way to get out of a murderous STF than saying the two humiliating words. This was a showcase not only of Cena’s courage and perseverance, but also of The Miz’s desire to win the belt, by hook or by crook.
2. Randy Orton def. Christian (World heavyweight Championship match):
Christian’s lifelong dream was crushed yet one more time by WWE’s Apex Predator as Randy Orton retained his World heavyweight Championship in one of the hardest fought contests in the illustrious careers of both men. From the opening bell, it became a personal battle, fuelled by the lifelong desire of two Superstars to be the absolute best. Orton, a third-generation brawler, was destined from birth to make himself part of the squared circle elite. Christian – the onetime starry-eyed boy with the impossible dream – who as long as he could remember has been giving his blood, sweat and tears to become a World Champion.
Both superstars dazzled the fans with a wonderful show of strength, character and wrestling prowess. The match went back-and-forth with each superstar earning countless nearfalls over the other. But The Viper struck when Christian allowed him to flip out of the Killswitch. Orton made full use of Christian’s momentary lapse of attention by nailing him with an RKO and getting the three-count.
3. Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler def. Michael Cole (“Kiss My Foot” match):
The seemingly endless spell of egomania from Michael Cole was finally brought to an end at Over the Limit, as Jerry Lawler finally got his measure of retribution against the man who had been humiliating and mentally torturing the Hall of Fame announcer for months. So much so, The King agreed to put his Hall of Fame ring on the line to get his hands on Cole just one more time. But this time proved to be his, and there were quite a few other people who settled their score with the despicably arrogant Cole.
With his trainer Jack Swagger gone from his side, Cole knew from the very beginning that he did not have a chance. Minutes after the match, he tried to flee up the entrance ramp. But he was brought back into the ring by none other than the Excellence of Execution, Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart. Hart apparently had too much of Cole’s insults to the Hall of Famers. After that began perhaps the worst fifteen minutes in Cole’s life. He lost the match in a matter of minutes, but the humiliation of having to kiss the King’s foot was just one of the misfortunes that lay in store for him. First he got some serious punishment handed out by Eve Torres on the behalf of the Divas, who had been subjected to quite a few insults by Cole in the past, and then, another Hall of Famer whom Cole had disgraced, Jim Ross, added his own ‘flavour of revenge’ by pouring barbeque sauce all over The King’s foot, which Cole was forced to kiss in front of a worldwide audience.
4. Kane and Big Show def. CM Punk and Mason Ryan (WWE tag Team Championship):
The tag team champions proved to be too much, both physically and mentally, for The Nexus, as they showed complete domination over their challengers, successfully defending their titles in the process. The two giants took out David Otunga and Michael McGillicutty earlier before the match to level out the playing field, and there was not mch that Punk or Ryam cold do to defeat such a cohesive unit as these two, and faced defeat when Mason Ryan suffered a double-choke slam at the hands of the champions.
5. R-Truth def. Rey Mysterio:
The transformation in the psyche of R-Truth was the highlight of the match as he defeated the high-flying Rey Mysterio. Truth was a totally diferrent person than what the fans knew him as. There was no funky entrance music, no dancing and no “What’s Up” to the crowd. Instead, there was just ruthless aggression launched on Mysterio, which was too much to handle even for a Human Highlight Rell. Truth sed a brand new finisher, a reverse Russian leg sweep to get the pin, and after the match, bashed Rey’s head with a bottle to put the exclamation point.
6. Sin Cara def. Chavo Guerrero:
The battle of the Latinos was won by WWE’s newest high-flying sensation, Sin Cara as he proved to one and all that he was not following in Chavo’s ‘footsteps’. To say the least, the match was electric, and involved a barrage of high-octane offensive moves from both the wrestlers. But at the end, it was Sin Cara who stood tall and cemented himself as a competitor in the WWE.
7. Ezekiel Jackson def. Wade Barrett via disqualification (Intercontinental title match):
The two former Corre partners collided in an extremely personal match, in which Jackson just dominated his opponent. Even when Barrett seemed to be gaining the upper hand, it angered Jackson even more and made him even more aggressive. Finally, it took an interference from Heath Slater and Justin Gabriel to end the match in DQ. Barrtt might havekept the title, but Jackson left the ring with a distinct psychological victory over the three men who had turned on him.
8. Brie Bella def. Kelly Kelly (Divas Championship match):
Veryone expected this match to be punctuated like every other Divas match has been for the past month, i.e, with the braided behemoth, Kharma, coming in and destroying one of the participants of the match. Well, that did not happen, but what happened was some twin magic, where the Bellas switched behind th referee’s back, and it was a fresh Nikki Bella who got the pin on Kelly, retaining the Divas Championship.
