WWE Raw 25th July, 2011: Review

Shantha

Triple H

On his first Monday Night Raw as the “Chief Operating Officer” of the WWE , ‘The Game’ Triple H facilitated the return of three of the biggest names back to the WWE. He also made several other blockbuster announcements during the state of the WWE address. The show also witnessed two WWE Championship matches to open and end one of the most controversial nights in the history of WWE.

Match 1: The Miz Vs Rey Mysterio

WWE Championship Match

The show kicked off with the Miz taking on the master of the 619 – Rey Mysterio in the finals of the WWE Championship Tournament. A solid wrestling match with both men battling it out to become the new WWE Champion. The Miz had most parts of the match in control. One of the high spots in this match was the Miz power-bombing Rey Mysterio off the ropes. But eventually Rey capitalized on the mistakes of the Miz to hit the 619 and a splash to gain a pinfall victory to become the new WWE Championship.

Winner and the new WWE Champion: Rey Mysterio

Rey Mysterio celebrating his victory backstage

This is the first time that Rey had become the WWE Champion in history. He had been World Heavyweight Champion two times in his career. However, Rey’s celebrations were cut short by the Miz who vented out his anger on the defeat by a brutal assault on Rey. After the departure of the Miz, Alberto Del Rio arrived with his briefcase and tried to cash it in. But he failed again since Rey countered and attacked him which forced him to make amends. Rey Mysterio celebrated his victory with fellow WWE superstars at the locker room with champagne.

Match 2: Dolph Ziggler Vs Evan Bourne

Singles Match

The second match of the night involved the United States Champion Dolph Ziggler and Evan Bourne. Dolph Ziggler was accompanied ringside by his business associate Vickie Guerrero. Dolph Ziggler was in his element throughout this match with his aggression and his perfectly executed moves. Bourne went for his Air Bourne finisher, which was evaded by Dolph. Dolph locked Evan in his submission hold called as the sleeperhold. Evan Bourne faded out slowly which prompted the referee to ring the bell. Dolph Ziggler is victorious via submission.

Winner: Dolph Ziggler

After this match there was a funny segment involving the Bella Twins, Eve Torres and Keith Stone, who were promoting one of Stone’s shows.

Match 3: Kelly Kelly and Eve Torres Vs Maryse and Melina

Divas Tag-Team Match

An usual Divas match with plenty of screaming and limited action. The match started off with Eve and Maryse taking on each other. Eve was dominant in most parts of the match. She then tagged in the Divas Champion Kelly Kelly who got the pinfall victory over Melina after hitting her finishing maneuver.

Winners: Kelly Kelly & Eve Torres

Cole complaining the addition of Jim Ross to the Commentary team

R-Truth and Triple H having a converstation

This match was followed by the arrival of ‘the Game’ Triple H, who was there to make the state of the WWE address. In the beginning of his speech, he complemented his predecessor Mr.McMahon for envisioning the WWE to become a global Juggernaut. He continued his speech to make an astonishing announcement. He announced that Rey Mysterio would defend his WWE Championship against John Cena in the main event of the show. He also announced that he had persuaded two stars to return back to the WWE. The first star to come out was the WWE Hall of Famer, Good ole Jim Ross. The arrival of Jim Ross to the commentary team pissed off Michael Cole who told Triple H that he wasn’t willing to work with JR. Triple H said that Cole would be given the day off and he can start working from the week after. He also announced that Michael Cole would take on a surprising opponent in the next match of the show.

Michael Cole’s exit was followed by the arrival of R-Truth who complained about loosing to John Cena at Capitol Punishment because of little Jimmy and also the fact that his fear of Spiders and Height costing him the victory at the Money in the Bank ladder match. Triple H mocked at R-Truth’s behavior and made fun of him which was actually good.

Match 4: Michael Cole Vs Zack Ryder

Singles Match

Michael Cole came out first to Triple H’s ring gear and entrance theme. He also spoofed Triple H’s walk and other in-ring moves before starting the match. He was followed by the surprise opponents who happened to be the Long Island Iced Z Zack Ryder. The fact that is to be noted here is that the Unofficial WWE Internet Champion Zack Ryder was competing only in second match of the year in the flagship show of the WWE – Raw. This match ended as soon as it got started as Zack Ryder hit the Rough Ryder on Michael Cole to get the pin fall victory.

Winner: Zack Ryder!

Match 5: Kofi Kingston Vs Alberto Del Rio

Singles Match

Kofi Vs Del Rio

This match was a rematch of last week’s WWE Championship Tournament First Round match in which Kofi Kingston gained a surprise pinfall victory over Alberto Del Rio. As expected Del Rio dominated in the match concentrating on the hands and legs of Kofi. Alberto Del Rio survived a near fall by catching the ropes at ringside. He then defeated Kofi by his cross arm breaker to avenge him over last week’s loss.

Winner: Alberto Del Rio

Josh Mathews interviewed The Miz backstage, during which The Miz lambasted Triple H for his idiotic actions on the show. He said that Triple H was making mistakes and would have to face the consequences.

Match 6: Rey Mysterio(C) Vs John Cena

Singles Match for the WWE Championship

Rey Mysterio Vs John Cena

John Cena came out to an arousing welcome by the Virginia crowd which was the complete opposite to the welcome he got at the Money in the Bank Pay Per View. The match started out slowly with Mysterio attacking Cena with his leg. There were plenty of high spots in this match with both Cena and Mysterio kicking out of each other’s finishers. Finally, Rey Mysterio yielded to Cena after getting hit by an attitude adjustement. The title changed hands once again in the same night. Cena celebrated his victory and was surprised when ‘Cult of Personality’ by Living Color started playing. CM Punk came out with his WWE Championship and walked down the ramp. He even entered the ring to have a staredown with Cena with both men holding their title belts high. A very good moment to end a show by posing more questions since there are currently two WWE Champions when there’s supposed to be only one.

Two Champions?

Bottom Line:

John Cena wins the match

A thrilling Monday Night Raw with plenty of good matches and promos. There were even two WWE title matches much to the excitement of the live crowd. The return of Jim Ross, John Morrison and CM Punk added even more color to the show. I’m very much interested to know what the WWE will come up with next week. Aren’t you?
