WWE Superstars – the only weekly show of the WWE which focuses solely on Wrestling, has been following a similar trend over the past few weeks. There were only singles matches on WWE Superstars, over a brief period of time, which were actually good if not better than tag-team or divas matches. But this week, the trend reverses back to what it was in the past. Interested to know what happened this week on WWE Superstars? Match 1: JTG vs. Mason Ryan
Singles Match
Some of you might have forgotten who Mason Ryan is. The last time when Mason Ryan was seen on TV , he was a member of the New Nexus along with CM Punk, McGillicutty and David Otunga. The Batista look-alike returns back after a injure layoff with this match against JTG in WWE Superstars. An average quality match with Ryan getting the pinfall victory over JTG. JTG is a heel currently, so it looks like the face turn of Ryan begins, coming back from his injury. Ryan is extremely powerful and looks to have a bright future. He is still slow and needs time to progress in the ring. He is limited with clotheslines and body slams, but he does have the look to continue to grow. He is similar to Brodus Clay in what he can and cannot do yet, but Ryan at least faces competition that makes him look good.
Winner: Mason Ryan
Match Rating: 3/5
Match 2: Tyler Reks and Curt Hawkins vs. Percy Watson and Titus O’Neil
Tag-team Match
The newest tag-team in the WWE – Tyler Reks and Curt Hawkins, faced off against the rookie team of Percy Watson and Titus O’Neil. The funny part is that Titus is still a part of WWE NXT as a rookie and yet he wrestled in this match as a WWE Superstar. The rookie did a fair job but eventually lost out to the mysterious pair of Reks and Hawkins. Reks is always a good wrestler, and Hawkins impressed me the most. He was more meticulous in the ring, working on his opponent and picking spots to finish his opponents off. Every guy showed me something which is huge especially for the young guys who are trying to make an impact. With the fast paced offense at the end, and the quick pin, I hope to see this match again.
Winners: Tyler Reks and Curt Hawkins
Match Rating: 4/5
Match 3: Alicia Fox vs. Tamina
Divas Singles Match
Fox seems to have made a sudden character turn from heel to a face within a span of few weeks. She beat Tamina in a short match which was actually good. I was happy to see Alicia Fox show some progression in the ring. I look back at her matches, and she has improved her quickly. She has a world of athleticism and her timing was actually on tonight. Tamina continues to get buried, but she does has some talent as well. Besides from Phoenix and Natalya, Tamina is probably the next powerful diva in the company. I enjoyed the match because it gave us divas that rarely go one on one against each other. One is a ground and pound diva, while the other relies on her athleticism. Good timing with good mixture of offense was the key to this interesting match.
Winner: Alicia Fox
Match Rating: 3/5
Match 4: Brodus Clay vs. Allen Turner
Singles Match
If you have good memory, then you would probably realize that Brodus Clay has been on a long winning run in WWE Superstars. Clay has been squashing unfamiliar opponents in quick matches. This week too, it didn’t take much time for Brodus to see off Allen Turner. Clay has a good 4 moves, hits them, and wins. The only notable thing Clay was different was the introduction of his new tights. He needs to stop being booked against nobodies. Zero offense from his opponents does not make him look intimidating.
Winner: Brodus Clay
Match Rating: 2/5
Match 5: Daniel Bryan vs. Heath Slater
Singles Match
Daniel Bryan beat Heath Slater in what was a great match from beginning to end. Bryan used a new submission move to force Slater to tap out. It’s a pity that Heath Slater is placed in matches where he is out of place. But Slater deserves credit. He is really, really good in the ring, but his character is bland, and does not have a stand out quality. Bryan is fantastic, as every match he adds a new wrinkle in his offensive moves. Whether it is another submission hold, or a way to reverse his opponent, Bryan continues to show why he is one of the best, if not the best, in the ring in the WWE. I do not love the idea of him being on Superstars every week, but as long as he does double, and sometimes triple duty, thumbs up for WWE for using him as much as possible. With the pace and the ability of both men, combined with the excellent mixture of submissions and unique offense, this match was a treat to watch.
Winner: Daniel Bryan
Match Rating: 4/5
The Bottom Line:
WWE Superstars was impressive this week. Barring the Brodus Clay match, all the other matches were high on quality and were a treat to watch. The entire show gave me something to take out of it and think that the young guys, not sure specifically which ones, will be able to fill some slots when needed a few years down the road as mid-carders and potentially a few main eventers in the near future.
