Backlash wasn't the show that we hoped it would be. There were mixed reviews for the Greatest Royal Rumble, and so we thought WWE would pull out all the stops for the first dual-branded pay-per-view. Somehow, there was a lack of cohesiveness running across the whole show. It certainly started off great but lost all steam thereafter.
Did you guys enjoy this show? We certainly thought there were far more bad moments than good, over the 3+ hours. Yes, the length of the show did not help matters either.
In this article, we shall bring you the best and separate it from the worst. Feel free to list your own best and worst in the comments below.
We shall have a tough time listing the 'best', but we'll try our very best.
A former WWE writer just went after JBL for his comments HERE
#1 Best: Starting hot
Day by day, it is becoming clearer that Rollins is the MVP of the company. Not only is he the top babyface on RAW, but also one of the best workers across both the brands. The Miz proved that he too can hang with the Kingslayer with gusto. The two put on the match of the night.
It is amazing to see how far The Miz has come over the years. At no point in his career was he ever considered to be an exceptional worker. Yet, he has the basics down and has developed into a fabulous storyteller.
You know you're doing something right when Kurt Angle sends out a special Tweet, congratulating your match. Congratulations to The Miz and Rollins on having one of the best matches of the year 2018!
#1 Worst: No title changes
There was not a single title change at Backlash. Yes, not one title change across the two brands. At the end of three hours, we felt a little shortchanged because of the same. We had the very same problem with the Greatest Royal Rumble too.
With no title change and no storyline running across most of the featured matches, the show just felt rather unimportant overall. We just hope that WWE pulls up their socks on RAW and SmackDown Live, this week.
#2 Best: Daniel Bryan's comprehensive win
We were glad that Daniel Bryan got to wrestle a whole match by himself on pay-per-view, after his marvellous performance at the Greatest Royal Rumble recently. He did not seem rusty at all, and made short work of Big Cass. We are quite glad that this was the case. Cass does not seem like he's in the same league as Bryan yet, and Bryan needed this win.
We also liked the beat down from Cass following the match. He came across as a big bully and that fits right in with his character.
#2 Worst: Devaluing the WWE Championship
AJ Styles versus Shinsuke Nakamura was the third last match on the card. Their match was followed by two meaningless, non-title matches. What does it say about SmackDown Live and what the company thinks of the blue brand?
What does it say about the prestige of the WWE Championship when compared to the significantly more respected Universal title?
Considering that the Styles vs. Nakamura match was actually better than the two matches that followed it, this was a real travesty. No wonder the crowd turned on the main event.
#3 Best: The little interlude
There was a dual-branded segment featuring Elias, Rusev Day, The New Day, Bobby Roode and No Way Jose at WWE Backlash 2018. This was a nice breather in the middle of the show. No, this wasn't quality television. But considering how things were during the rest of the evening, we were entertained.
We were glad to also see Bobby Roode receive a thunderous babyface pop. He seemed the most over he's been since his debut.
#3 Worst: Carmella vs. Charlotte Flair
This was honestly one of the most puzzling booking decisions of the night. Charlotte Flair succumbed to Carmella after it seemed like she'd injured her knee following a Moonsault. Carmella picked up a clean, easy win.
How did the woman that ended Asuka's streak get defeated so easily?
Charlotte Flair also shockingly took most of the punishment during her match with the Princess of Staten Island. Either the company has a lot of faith in Carmella or they've suddenly lost faith in Charlotte Flair.
#4 Best/worst: Nia Jax's promo
The Alexa Bliss vs. Nia Jax match was the only one with a really coherent storyline. It ended with the babyface standing tall. The wicked witch of WWE has been vanquished forever. All's well that ends well.
Jax spoke up after her match. She addressed an important issue - bullying. This was a fantastic gesture from WWE and it was particularly cool of them to address an issue as sensitive as fat-shaming.
However, we just thought that her delivery of the promo seemed a little off. Jax probably has early championship jitters and will only get better as time passes.
As for the Goddess, we do hope we see her in the championship picture again down the line!
