John Cena is one of two men on the list who are associated with the modern era of wrestling. Big Match John had two extremely long reigns with the belt right at the start of his tenure as a main eventer. This was the second of those reigns, with his first ever title reign being 280 days long. He won the belt at Unforgiven 2006, defeating Edge in a TLC match, but would lose the belt after being stripped of it due to injury. This reign went from September 17, 2006 to October 2, 2007.

This reign exists in the time when champions make regular championship defenses, at least once a month. During this run, Cena defeated the likes of Umaga, Shawn Michaels, The Great Khali and Randy Orton. The reign ended while feuding with Orton, after a botched hip-toss leading Cena to tear his pectoral muscle against Mr. Kennedy. Orton was awarded the vacant belt, and Cena would feud for it on his return in early 2008, but fail to win it.
