As 2017 finally comes to an end, it seems like it's the perfect time to look back on some of the biggest moments of the past 12 months. The WWE Universe isn't as easily shocked as they used to be, gone are the days where Shane McMahon brought out WCW in one of the biggest swerves in wrestling history, but despite the interference of the internet, WWE is still able to provide some shocks and surprises on a regular basis.

The past 12 months have seen some of the most shocking debuts, swerves and returns and since it is the final weekend of the year, it's time to look back on all of the most shocking moments that many of the WWE Universe have probably forgot happened in this calendar year.

#10. A perfect entrant in The Royal Rumble

Dilliinger became
Dillinger became "The Perfect" entrant in the 2017 Royal Rumble

The number 10 spot couldn't really go to anyone else this year since the only surprise of the 2017 Royal Rumble saw The Perfect 10 enter the fray in the 10th position. At this point, Tye Dillinger was one of the most popular stars in NXT and his inclusion was definitely one that the fans in attendance reacted positively to.

Tye didn't last long in The Rumble match and wasn't called up to the SmackDown brand until April and since then it seems that The Perfect 10 has just become another superstar who is making up the numbers on the main roster. Despite this, he will always have that fantastic entrance to look back on, which was the biggest shock of the Rumble.

#9. Mickie James is La Luchadora

M
Mickie James returned to WWE as La Luchadora back in January

Way back in January the SmackDown Women's Division was being dominated by Alexa Bliss but there was seemingly someone who was helping her as part of her feud with Becky Lynch.

La Luchadora had popped up and played her part in Alexa's matches for a number of weeks and in an effort to ensure that she was given a fair shot at the SmackDown Women's Championship, Becky faced off against Alexa inside a steel cage in the SmackDown Live main event, making history in the process. There were a number of rumours about who this mysterious female could be in the weeks before her identity was finally revealed.

La Luchadora made her presence known inside the steel cage and helped Alexa to retain her Women's Championship before it was revealed that it was former Women's Champion Mickie James under the mask. She has since gone on to become an integral part of the Raw Women's Division over the past year.

#8. Tomasso Ciampa turns on Johnny Gargano

Ciampa broke a number of hearts back at NXT Takeover: Chicago

Johnny Gargano and Tomasso Ciampa have taken NXT by storm over the past few years and are former NXT Tag Team Champions. As DIY they became one of the most popular teams on the developmental brand, but it seems that Ciampa wanted more.

Back at NXT Takeover: Chicago in May after DIY failed to recapture their Tag Team Championships from The Authors of Pain, Ciampa attacked his longtime partner in what was one of the most heartbreaking heel turns of the year.Ciampa later explained that this was because the NXT Universe and Gargano thought that he was replaceable.

Ciampa has suffered a knee injury that has kept him sidelined over the past year, but it seems that Gargano has been able to climb the ranks to recently become the new Number One Contender for the NXT Championship. 2018 could be an interesting year if Ciampa is able to make his return in the coming weeks and Gargano is finally given the opportunity to extract revenge.

#7. Kevin Owens attacks Vince McMahon

Kevin Owens unleashed a brutal attack on The WWE Chairman

Kevin Owens was the Universal Champion at the turn of the year but after losing his title to Goldberg at Fastlane and then after winning the United States Championship from Chris Jericho at WrestleMania 33, Owens was moved over to the SmackDown brand as part of the Superstar Shake-up.

Owens has had a number of problems with Shane McMahon ever since he was moved to SmackDown and this was highlighted when Vince McMahon announced that the duo would collide inside Hell in a Cell. This was done as a way to prevent Owens from suing the company after the Commissioner attacked him the week before, but it seems that Owens wanted to send a message.

Owens headbutted McMahon after he agreed that he could "beat a McMahon senseless" before he then hit the Chairman with a superkick and a splash from the top rope. McMahon hasn't been part of something this brutal in a number of years and it definitely made sure there was a lot more than just pride riding on his match with Shane at Hell in a Cell.

#6. Braun Strowman flips an ambulance

Over the years, the WWE Universe has witnessed a number of feats of strength but none have come close to when Braun Strowman decided to flip an ambulance with Roman Reigns still inside.

This was just after Roman Reigns defeated The Undertaker at WrestleMania and the WWE Universe enjoyed every moment of it, but it seems that Roman was able to get revenge a few weeks later when he reversed an ambulance into a wall with Braun in the back.

It has been a fantastic year for both Roman and Braun in 2017 and one of the main reasons for this is because they had a stand out feud against each other that took over Raw for a number of months, this feud was something that really put Braun on the map in WWE.

#5. Paige returned to WWE

Paige had a memorable return to WWE back in November

Paige had a beginning to 2017 that she would much rather forget, but after recovering from neck surgery, it was determined that Paige was ready to return to the company for the first time in more than 14 months. For a number of weeks, there were rumours that Paige was backstage and that she could have returned in the UK back in November, but WWE decided to give their fanbase a huge shock return instead.

Not only did Paige return following Survivor Series last month, but the former Divas Champion brought friends. Sonya Deville and Mandy Rose made their main roster debuts by attacking Mickie James, Sasha Banks and Bayley as Alicia Fox managed to run away and avoid the physicality of the attack.

The trio later announced that they were collectively known as Absolution and they have been able to change the landscape of the Raw Women's Division over the past few weeks.

#4. Adam Cole arrives in NXT

If there was one thing in WWE that changed the landscape of the NXT brand in 2017, it was Adam Cole's debut back at NXT Takeover: Brooklyn II. Cole attacked Drew McIntyre after he had defeated Bobby Roode to become the new NXT Champion., to send a message to the entire NXT locker room.

Cole was joined by Bobby Fish and Kyle O'Reilly as the trio later became known as The Undisputed Era. Fish and O'Reilly recently became NXT Tag Team Champions thanks to interference from Adam Cole, and it seems that this could just be a sign of things to come for the trio in NXT heading into 2018.

#3. The Shield reunion

After more than three years apart, The Shield were finally back in the same page in 2017
After more than three years apart, The Shield were finally back on the same page in 2017

Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns are all former World Champions in their own right, but they will always be seen as former members of The Shield. The group split more than three years ago when Rollins sided with The Authority over his brothers, which led to his push into the main event picture back in 2014.

It was a well-known fact that if The Shield ever had a common enemy then they would be able to get back onto the same page and reunite. This finally happened at the beginning of October when The Miz, Sheamus and Cesaro's attempt to divide and conquer only led to all three men coming together once more.

The Shield's reunion could have been much better than it actually was if Reigns didn't fall victim to illness and Ambrose wasn't recently injured, but it seems that WWE at least tried to give the fans what they wanted here.

#2. The return of The Hardy Boyz

Mark out moment of the year would have to be when The Hardyz made their long overdue return to WWE back at WrestleMania 33.

The New Day interrupted the triple threat ladder match between Enzo and Cass, Cesaro and Sheamus and The Club to state that there was another team that was joining the match to make it a fatal four-way.

This team was shocking unveiled to be The Hardy Boyz who incredibly went on to become Champions when they did what they have always done best throughout their career and climbed a ladder to retrieve the belts. Even though Jeff's recent shoulder injury has kept him sidelined for the past few months it seems that Matt Hardy has finally been able to become "Woken" in WWE.

#1. The Festival of Friendship

The Festival Of Friendship marked the end of Jericho and Owens' friendship
The Festival Of Friendship marked the end of Jericho and Owens' friendship

Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens were the best of friends at the beginning of the year as Jericho stepped up to help Owens when no one else would. It was thought that their friendship would last for much longer than it did, so many fans were left heartbroken when Owens brought their partnership to an abrupt end back in February.

It seems that Triple H had told Kevin Owens that he needed to be taken seriously as Champion now and he couldn't do that with Jericho by his side, which is why he decided to give Y2J a present.

It was perhaps the best-written heel turn in recent memory as Owens handed Jericho the list of KO and there was only one name on it. He then unleashed an attack on his former best friend that saw him stretchered out of the arena, but Jericho got revenge a few weeks later at Fastlane when he cost Owens his Universal Championship.
