In 2011, CM Punk had emerged as the biggest babyface in all of WWE. Despite his normally confrontational attitude, CM Punk was seen as the new incarnation of a Stone Cold Steve Austin type anti-hero.

John Cena was arguably the biggest star in the WWE, but had struggled with polarizing crowd reactions. CM Punk wrestled Cena for the WWE Championship at Summerslam in a grueling contest that saw the Straight Edge Superstar go over clean.

Then, the unthinkable happened. Literally the last person anyone expected to see, Kevin Nash, attacked CM Punk and left him vulnerable for an Alberto Del Rio Money in the Bank Cash in.

The shocking moment led to both Punk's downfall and the rise of Del Rio to the main event. Curiously, CM Punk would never actually wrestle Kevin Nash as part of the program.
