Kenny Omega and Kota Ibushi played their roles so well, many wonder if they were playing at all

Oftentimes, when a young wrestler debuts for a new promotion in Japan, if they have not proven themselves yet, they will be given a gimmick considered embarrassing or even shameful. This is a way of the young rookie to pay their dues in the industry, and also has the added bonus of getting them noticed, as the gimmick will often be extreme or attention-grabbing.

This was the case with Kenny Omega and his partner Kota Ibushi. However, what was intended to humble them only gave them a tremendous springboard into sports entertainment consciousness, because Omega and Ibushi played the role they were given to the hilt.

In fact, many fans and even wrestling journalists were fooled into thinking they were actually in a relationship with one another. Omega plays it coy about the gimmick, even to this day, but by all indications, he and Ibushi are just very good friends.

WWE has used this gimmick before, with Billy and Chuck, and it was in the old WCW as well with the West Hollywood Blondes. It's not likely to happen -- Ibushi's contract isn't up for a bit after Omega's expires -- but in the world of pro wrestling, never say never.
