As Hulk Hogan felt a stronger and stronger pull toward an acting career, he was looking to wind down with wrestling. The only problem was he didn't have a clear successor. Macho Man Randy Savage was out of favour with WWE management, leaving only one true applicant for the position.
Ultimate Warrior was already the Intercontinental champion at the time, and his title match with Hogan was dubbed "the Ultimate Challenge." In the champion vs champion contest, Warrior came out victorious after a brutal slugfest that removed most of Hellwig's face paint.
Though he would be forced to vacate the IC title days later, for a brief period of time Ultimate Warrior was a double champion. In fact, he remains the only wrestler to ever hold both the IC strap and the world title at the same time.
