After the departures of top Hispanic stars Alberto Del Rio and Rey Mysterio, WWE was on the lookout for a new star to bring into the fold. Since Carlito's own WWE departure in 2010 for his refusal to go to rehab after a wellness policy violation, he has wrestled all over the world.

A common face on the Indie scene, Carlito also wrestles for his father’s promotion, the World Wrestling Council (WWC) in Puerto Rico, where he is a 15-time World Champion.

After initial reports stated Carlito was likely on his way back into the company, he declined an offer to return reportedly due to a low ball cash offer from WWE.
