The biggest difference between the previous WWE eras and the current era is social media. Back then, superstars had to rely on television shows to build up their feud. But now, they have much wider platforms like Twitter and Facebook. While these can be used pretty effectively for building up storylines, it may work in an opposite direction as well.
For instance, a platform like Twitter often proves to be the stage for superstars to take personal shots at each other. And not all of these disputes are a work. This list takes a look at some of those Twitter battles that entertained the fans. And at the same time, exposed the real life grudge between certain wrestlers.
CM Punk and Hulk Hogan
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
CM Punk is pretty active in Twitter and you are going to see a lot of him in the list. The most recent venture of Punk in the social media platform came against Hulk Hogan. It was Hogan who fired the first shot by saying “Like I said the Blackhawks are in a whole lot of trouble, they should take their puck “punk” and go home, CM can show them the way brother.” '
Punk was not impressed with these words and hit back at Hogan. Punk Tweeted, "You mispronounced the team captains name and didn't even know the coaches name. You're a hack.Shut the fuck up or I'll wreck you Hogan" at the Hall of Famer. The chances of this Twitter battle going on is pretty high, but as for now, Punk's tweet is enough to earn him a place in the list.
CM Punk and Hideo Itami
Another recent Twitter battle that CM Punk had was with Hideo Itami. Itami and Punk have a lot of history between them. The interesting exchange between these two started when Punk tweeted to Young Bucks. Punk said that he did not steal finishers. Hideo was a bit offended by the tweet as the finisher that Punk used was actually made famous by Hideo.
Hideo replied to the tweet by saying that Punk is a great comedian to say that he does not steal finishers. The two men later locked horns once again later when they had an exchange about their merchandise. As far as we know, this Twitter battle is far from over.
Stephanie McMahon and AJ Lee
Just like her husband, AJ Lee has also been controversial on Twitter. What provoked AJ was Stephanie McMahon's tweet to Hollywood actress Patricia Arquette. Stephanie thanks Patricia for the 'equal right for Women' speech that she gave at the Oscars.
AJ saw this as a sign of hypocrisy from Stephanie and immediately used Twitter to make her feelings clear.
"Your female wrestlers have record selling merchandise and have starred in the highest rated segment of the show several times …And yet they receive a fraction of the wages & screen time of the majority of the male roster. #UseYourVoice" AJ tweeted.
Stephanie responded by saying " Thank You, AJ Lee, I appreciate your opinion". Although, Stephanie did not say anything out of the line, here anger was there to be seen in her words.
Kevin Nash and Ultimate Warrior
Kevin Nash and Ultimate Warrior are two superstars who don’t have a habit of holding back. It started in 2012 when Warrior went on to tag Nash as a d**k head in reply to a question from a fan. Nash was furious with this and he called out Warrior for a real fight.
"Never realized I had a problem with Jim (Warrior). Seemed to get along fine in Scottsdale. Come on my clown, turn that frown upside down. A true warrior never turns down a challenge. Put up a 100K. I’ll do the same. 3 rounds. MMA rules. winner take all. I’m talking shoot, not sports entertainment. Jim Hellwig needs to put up or shut the f*** up. The day before Mania in Miami area. Warrior will have to pass all HIV and hep a b and c tests. I’ll do the same," Nash Tweeted.
Warrior waved off the challenge in a video blog. Nash reacted to this by saying that Warrior knows only to give vagina monolog. The two superstars, however, buried their hatchet in 2014. And just days after this, Ultimate Warrior passed away.
Batista and Alberto Del Rio
His 2014 spell in the WWE is something that Batista would love to forget. It completely derailed the image that he had built earlier. The Twitter battle that Batista had with Alberto Del Rio was one of the stand-out moments from this forgettable run. Alberto Del Rio started delivering promos against Batista before the Animal's appearance as the two men were supposed to feud.
Batista reacted on Twitter by saying " Who the hell is Alberto Del Rio?!!". Del Rio did not appreciate the same and soon had a fitting reply in which he said, "I’m the one winning all the major titles while u were getting ur ass kick by your plumber (Vince lucero) See u at the rumble".
The way in which Del Rio took shots at Batista's MMA career turned the work into a shoot. Batista later called Alberto Del Rio a C grade superstar and asked him not to turn a work into a shoot. The tweets were later deleted and apparently the hatchet was buried as well. The amount of kayfabe in the tweets is still a talking point.
Miz and Tommy Dreamer
Tommy Dreamer and Miz once locked horns on Twitter and made the entire wrestling world notice. Tommy kicked off the battle when he said "calling Miz Awesome is a joke". Tommy piled the insult again when he said that ratings going up due to young champions is a myth. Miz was in no mood to hold back and struck viciously back at the ECW original.
Miz called Tommy “old, fat, balding has-been.” Tommy took out his resume to reply to this tweet and said that he was the highest rating main event in ECW every year for three years. This apparently was the final blow and Miz declined to reply. The reason for Miz's withdrawal is not known till date. But according to Miz, he did not want to waste his time on an irrelevant superstar.
Sunny and Ashley Massaro
Sunny and Ashely Massaro had the ultimate catfight on Social Media. The two women apparently crossed paths at an event and according to Sunny, Ashley did not show signs of proper respect. She posted " Ashley Massaro can kiss my hot a**…not once did she introduce herself to me. Not once and she dressed like a stripper," on her Facebook account to show her disappointment.
Ashley replied in Twitter and called Sunny a beached whale. The fans thought that this was the end, but Sunny had more in her arsenal. She took another shot at Ashley by saying, "FYI: for those of you emailing me, asking to “hook up”…. I'm NOT an escort, sorry. give it up. tweet to Ashley Massaro, I heard she has a history in that field,".
Instead of using words to reply to Sunny, Ashley simply posted a screenshot from an infamous Skype session of Sunny. It was a killer blow and Sunny kept low after this.
Shawn Michaels and Shane Helms
The fans might remember Shane Helms from his Hurricane days. He had some memorable matches in the WWE and is still considered to a solid worker in the Independent scene. Some time back, Helms did an outrageous thing of going up against Shawn Michaels on Twitter. It was a one-sided attack on most occasions. Helms called Michaels a jerk and a drug addict. He also said that Michaels was living a lie by being a born-again Christian.
Michaels, meanwhile, surprised everyone with his reaction. He said that he was not going to stoop to the level of Helms and went on to make it clear that the comments meant nothing to him. The whole thing painted Michaels as a good guy while Helms took a lot of heat from the fans.
CM Punk and Kurt Angle
The third appearance of CM Punk in the list comes thanks to Kurt Angle. Punk called TNA an Indy League in 2012. This description did not impress Kurt Angle and he went vocal about it. Angle replied to Punk through a series of Tweets.
'"Punk wants to Say Tna Is An Indy League? I Was On top in Wwe when You Were trying to Get a Job Anywhere. It Was My Choice to go to Tna. …If I ever See You Punk, Hide B**ch! Who Wants to See Angle vs. Punk? It would Last 30 Secs. Lol. Just Kidding. I’m not Mad anymore. Punk, Ur Safe Now… Put It to Rest. Angle vs. Punk will Happen. TNA or WWE. I Hope Tna. We’ll See. U tough Punk?
If Tna is an Indy Company, then Why Do I Make More $ than Punk Does in WWE? I’m just Saying." Angle Tweeted.
There were some pure emotions in Angle's words and though he later went on to say that he was joking, no one believed him. A year later Angle took another shot at Punk when he said that even the Pope could kick Punk's rear. The chances of these two men working a match are low so Twitter battles might be the only thing that we get.
Bret Hart and Hulk Hogan
Unlike most of the other Twitter battle you saw in the list, this one went deep into the personal matters. Hogan and Bret had a lot of bad blood between them from their WWE days itself and Bret poured out all those emotions on Twitter. It was Bret who drew first blood in the battle when he called Hogan “a two-faced, backstabbing steroid freak.”.
Hogan responded rather mildly than expected but what Bret did next shocked everyone. Bret dragged Hogan's family into the mix and mentioned about John Graziano. Graziano was a person who got injured in a car accident that involved Hogan's son, Nick.
It was a classic case of going out of the limit. And Hogan decided that it was better of him to stop the exchange right there rather than going forward.
