With WWE Elimination Chamber scheduled for this Sunday, this week saw WWE hyping the pay-per-view. While the Creative team added two more matches (Finn Balor vs Bobby Lashley and Lio Rush in a handicap match for the Intercontinental Championship, and Baron Corbin vs Braun Strowman) to the star-studded match card, it also replaced an unfit Mustafa Ali with Kofi Kingston in the Elimination Chamber matchup for the WWE Championship.
However, amidst all this, the segment which saw Vince McMahon suspending Becky Lynch for 60 days and replacing her with Charlotte Flair in her match against Ronda Rousey at WrestleMania 35 was clearly the highlight of the week. However, it was not the only controversial decision taken by WWE this week.
On another note, WWE also got a few things right- The Revival winning Raw the tag team titles, Seth Rollins' fiery promo. All in all, it was quite a mixed week for WWE which had a fair share of everything.
So, without further ado, let's take a look at 2 things which should not have happened and 2 things we are glad happened this week in WWE.
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
#4 Should not have happened: The recent NXT call-ups jobbing on the red brand
EC3 and Nikki Cross have been the NXT rookies who have made their main roster debut recently on the Raw roster. However, both received a clean loss on the last episode of Raw. While EC3 lost his match against Ambrose, Nikki succumbed to Ruby Riot this Monday Night on Raw.
Instead of having them feature in a solid storyline in the mid-card to gather momentum and get over among fans, WWE had them incurred losses. While this will not only hinder there momentum and credibility, it will also affect WWE in the long run.
#3 Should not have happened: The weird suspension of Becky Lynch
In spite of putting her ego aside and apologizing to the McMahons this week on Raw, Becky Lynch was suspended by Vince McMahon for 60 days. Given her suspension would not allow her to participate at The Grandest Stage of Them All, Vince replaced her with Charlotte Flair in her match against Ronda Rousey at WrestleMania 35.
While this has caused an outburst on the Internet, there have been speculations that this was done only to include Charlotte to make it a triple threat match and give Becky sometime off given her rumoured injury. However, to be honest, the segment did not make any sense at all and was mostly weird, to say the least.
Why would you have Becky apologize first if the plan all along was to suspend her? Becky taking out the entire McMahon family to a massive pop from the crowd instead of apologizing, resulting in a suspension would have made more sense.
Well, the entire segment was a bit weird and could have carried out a bit differently.
#2 Glad that it happened: The Revival winning the Raw tag team Championship
The Revival won the Raw tag team titles this Monday Night on Raw when they defeated the team of Chad Gable and Bobby Roode.
The recent stint of Gable and Roode as the tag champs on the red brand was getting underwhelming and with reports of a few superstars getting disgruntled and frustrated with the company making headlines in the recent weeks, WWE made the right move to crown The Revival as the tag champs.
While the SmackDown roster has a well-defined tag team division with some of the high profile names in the likes of New Day and The Usos featuring on the roster, the Raw roster lacks heavily in that department.
Thus, crowning The Revival as new champs will not only bring a breath of fresh oxygen in the division but could also make the division relevant again if Creative book them properly.
#1 Glad that it happened: Ambrose turning babyface
"Slay The Beast", yes, after Seth Rollins was finished with his fiery promo this week on Raw, Dean Ambrose showed up to deliver a message to his former Shield Brother, Seth Rollins to slay the beast at WrestleMania 35.
With this WWE had him turn face and as a matter of fact, he went to defeat EC3 cleanly moments later.
Of all the buzz and speculation surrounding Ambrose's heel turn, all we got was a damp squib. Ambrose not only failed to impress as a heel but also got lost on the mix on the roster. To be honest, it played a huge role in the recent Ambrose's fiasco. However, WWE chose to turn him into a babyface this week on Raw and it could prove to be a masterstroke.
Given Ambrose will leave the WWE upon termination of his contract, he has crowd sympathy and support behind him and the massive pop which he received when he delivered his message to Rollins is the testament to the same.
Thus this recent turn would certainly boost up the ratings and who knows, a Shield reunion could be on the cards before Ambrose's departure.
