21-0: No historic end to a legend's unbeaten streak

History repeats itself, as another challenger bites the dust. After weeks of drama that witnessed the thin line between reality and sports entertainment blurring, the streak remains intact; 21-0 it is.

Over the years, the Undertaker has had some serious feuds. He has raised hell in a cell, handicapped a team of giants, thrown people into caskets, won the World Heavyweight Championship and ended careers. He has competed with the best of wrestlers; be it the King of Kings HHH or the heart break kid Shawn Michaels, the outcome has always been the same. The only two things that have changed over the years are the challengers and the build up to the big match in WrestleMania.

For the past few years, WWE has been sticking to a rut that gives commoners like us an insight into their creative heads and almost 100% accuracy in predicting the match outcome. While some sceptics maintained that the streak might end, the others knew 21-0 was inevitable. I personally thought if there’s anyone who can end the streak, it was CM Punk!

The build up to WrestleMania 29 was no different, and yet played itself entirely on a different level. CM Punk has re-defined the term “heel” in the world of sports entertainment. From becoming a babyface after the very famous promo on Monday night RAW to “bringing boots to a****” on the people’s champ and turning heel, CM Punk has fought every obstacle to be the face of WWE. From establishing a long reign as a champ to being the top “heel” of the company, Punk has brought forth to the viewers a whole new face of WWE which doesn’t involve the stereotyped muscle factories hogging the limelight.

That being said, the outcome of the epic match in WrestleMania makes me wonder why WWE is hell bent on playing safe. The legend of the dead man is undeniable. He has given back to the company a lot more than most of the new kids on the block combined together have. Be it the ministry of darkness or the American bad-a**, the dead man has always walked tall. Having said that, new generation WWE fans like me haven’t had the good fortune of watching this legend breathe life into wrestling. In my frank opinion, once a year appearance, as spectacular as it might be, isn’t enough to keep viewers hooked on for one more year for another storyline, especially when the result is known well beforehand, so well that it can be published! For people who’ve grown up in the Cena-era, this doesn’t exactly make sense!

I would say it’s high time WWE restores faith in the younger talents than clinging on to the legends. A victory to Punk would’ve ensured a respectable yet believable end to the Undertaker’s streak. After all, it’s no news that CM Punk is one of the best technical wrestlers the company has ever had and the second city saint had enough time in his WWE career to cash in on the win, something that cannot be said about the HHH’s and HBK’s that came along. And seriously, it would be painful to see someone like Cena ending the streak! (I will be lying to you if I say I don’t see the possibility of this happening.)

All in all, a great show at WrestleMania 29; hopefully a rematch in WrestleMania 30. And if the creative heads are reading this, every streak deserves a historic end!
