Strowman proved that he did not need a title around his waist to make 2017 his year. He began the year by winning a Last Man Standing Match against Sami Zayn on the January 2nd episode of Raw.

He got his first world championship shot, when he faced Kevin Owens for the WWE Universal Title on the January 30th episode of Raw, which he won by disqualification after interference by Roman Reigns.

He had a long-running feud with Roman Reigns, thereafter. On the April 10th episode of Raw, Strowman attacked Reigns several times in the backstage area, to a point where he overturned an ambulance with Reigns inside. The next week on Raw, Strowman faced Big Show in the main event, in which he performed a superplex, causing the ring to collapse. He went on to defeat Roman Reigns at WWE Payback, and subsequently, defeated Reigns again at WWE Great Balls of Fire.

Strowman then went on to the main event of WWE SummerSlam for the WWE Universal title, in a Match of the Year candidate Fatal 4-way match, which he eventually lost. He also went on to face Brock Lesnar at WWE No Mercy for the title, but could not capture the title.

Braun Strowman then teamed with The Miz, Miztourage and Kane to face Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose and Kurt Angle in a 5-on-3 handicap match but was turned against by his own teammates. At WWE Survivor Series, Team Raw defeated Team SmackDown Live with Braun and Triple H being the sole survivors. After the match, Strowman attacked Triple H with two Running Powerslams.

2017 was indeed a monstrous year for Braun Strowman.
