There was a point when no one would have thought this man would make it in the WWE. He began and ended 2017 with the WWE Championship.
In the beginning of the year, AJ Styles held the WWE Championship, before losing it to John Cena in probably what was the Match of the Year, at the WWE Royal Rumble, ending his 140-day reign.
Styles was then involved in a feud with the SmackDown Live Commissioner, Shane McMahon, leading to their match at WWE Wrestlemania. At Wrestlemania, Styles stole the show and emerged victorious against Shane McMahon.
AJ Styles would then go on to challenge for the WWE United States Championship, which he won at a house show, at Madison Square Garden, where he defeated Kevin Owens for the title. This was his first United States title of his career. After losing the title back to Owens at WWE Battleground, Styles regained the title two days later at SmackDown Live, becoming a 2-time WWE United States Champion. At WWE SummerSlam, Styles successfully retained the title again, against Kevin Owens. Eventually, Styles lost the title to Baron Corbin, thus ending his 75-day reign.
Styles also competed in a Raw Pay-Per-View, WWE TLC: Tables, Ladders and Chairs, against Finn Balor, replacing Bray Wyatt who was unable to compete at the event. Styles would begin a feud with WWE Champion, Jinder Mahal around the time. On the November 7 episode of SmackDown Live in Manchester, England, AJ Styles would go on to defeat Jinder Mahal in the main event, for the WWE Championship. It marked the first time the WWE Championship changed hands on SmackDown since September 2003. As a result, a classic bout was set up for WWE Survivor Series, between WWE Champion AJ Styles and WWE Universal Champion Brock Lesnar, which Styles eventually lost after putting up an amazing match.
At WWE Clash of Champions, AJ Styles defeated Jinder Mahal to retain the title, thus finishing off the year, from the where he started, as the WWE Champion, and eventually, topping our list.
