Ambrose began the year by winning the WWE Intercontinental Championship on the January 3 edition of SmackDown Live, where he defeated The Miz and won the title for the 2nd time. He lasted for almost 27 minutes in the Royal Rumble match before being eliminated by Brock Lesnar. He would go on to WWE Wrestlemania to successfully defend his Intercontinental title against Baron Corbin.
After moving to Raw, due to the Superstar Shakeup, Ambrose would resume his rivalry against The Miz, to whom he would lose the title at WWE Extreme Rules, thus ending his reign at 152 days.
One of his most defining moments came during the build-up to WWE SummerSlam, which saw him reuniting with his former Shield buddy, Seth Rollins. The duo would go on to win the Raw Tag Team Championship at WWE SummerSlam, by defeating Cesaro and Sheamus, making Ambrose both a "Triple Crown" and "Grand Slam Champion" in the process. The duo also successfully defended their titles at WWE No Mercy.
Ambrose would then go on to team with Rollins and Kurt Angle in the main event of WWE TLC: Tables, Ladders and Chairs, to win a 5-on-3 handicap TLC match. Ambrose and Rollins would lose the titles to Cesaro and Sheamus on the November 6 episode of Raw, after an interference by The New Day, thus ending their reign at 78 days.
The Shield would unite for WWE Survivor Series where the trio with Roman Reigns back, would go on defeat The New Day.
