The Prizefighter, Kevin Owens, begin the year as the WWE Universal Champion. He defended his title against Roman Reigns at WWE Royal Rumble in a no disqualification match. He also defended the title against Braun Strawman on the following night of Raw. Soon after ending his friendship with Chris Jericho, Owens lost his title to Goldberg at WWE Fastlane, ending his championship reign at 188 days.

Owens then went on to challenge Jericho for the WWE United States Championship at WWE Wrestlemania. At Wrestlemania, Owens emerged victorious and became the WWE United States Champion. At WWE Payback, Owens would lose the title back to Jericho, ending his reign at 28 days. However, Owens would reclaim his title back on the May 2 episode of SmackDown Live by defeating Jericho.

At WWE Backlash, Owens would defeat AJ Styles to successfully retain his title. During a house show at Madison Square Garden, Owens would lose the title to AJ Styles, ending his reign at 66 days. Owens defeated Styles in a rematch to capture the United States Championship for the 3rd time at WWE Battleground, but lost it back to AJ Styles again, two days later at WWE SmackDown Live.

Kevin Owens went on to have an amazing feud with SmackDown Live Commissioner, Shane McMahon. On the September 12 episode of SmackDown Live, Owens assaulted Mr. McMahon repeatedly. At WWE Hell In A Cell, Owens won the main event Hell In A Cell match against Shane McMahon after he was saved by Sami Zayn from a leap of faith off the top of the cell by Shane McMahon.

Owens then teamed up with Zayn at WWE Survivor Series, to defeat the team of Breezango. Later that night, the duo interfered in the main event to try and cost Team SmackDown the victory. Owens and Zayn then defeated Randy Orton and Shinsuke Nakamura at WWE Clash of Champions, thus saving their place in the WWE.
