Carmelo Hayes also has a past, having risen through the ranks in WWE NXT before landing on Friday nights in April. He was one of the most charismatic characters while in developmental. One unique aspect of his character was the promos he'd cut while getting his hair cut in a barbershop.
The former NXT Champion brought the barbershop to WWE SmackDown tonight. He spoke ahead of his singles match against Andrade while getting styled by his barber. The rising star came up on the losing side against El Idolo in an enthralling battle tonight (July 19).

It's a fresh approach that allows his character to stand out from the usual repetitive promos given in-ring. It's also a nice callback to his time in WWE NXT when he was one of the best characters and champions in the brand's history.
Since being drafted earlier this year, Carmelo Hayes has encountered a somewhat slow start on the main roster. He lost to Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes on his blue brand debut in his most memorable appearance until now. Perhaps bringing back the unique barbershop segment will allow him to connect more with fans.

He Sweet Chin Music'd former tag partner Marty Janetty through a barber shop window to kickstart his singles career.
HIM told Busted Open Radio in May 2023 while still in developmental:

Some of the most memorable barbershop segments include Bron Breakker's surprise visit and his catch-up with former partner Trick Williams. They helped build storylines with a style different than your usual promos.
Carmelo Hayes' character grew throughout his time in NXT, and he'll hope that's the case with SmackDown. Former WWE Champion Big E thinks the A-Champ is the future of the company. He certainly has time on his side as he is at a young age with the world at his feet.
