This week on Raw, Hardcore legend Mick Foley made his way to the middle to announce the new WWE 24/7 Championship. The championship will be defended across all of WWE's brands, including Raw, SmackDown, 205 Live, NXT, and NXT UK.
The championship is contested under a similar rule to the past WWE Hardcore Championship, which at one time had a "24/7 rule". The 24/7 Championship can be defended anytime, anywhere, as long as a referee is present.
The inaugural champion was crowned just a few minutes later, as Titus O’Neil was able to “pick up” the title. Titus lost the championship a little over a minute later to Bobby Roode, who later lost it to R-Truth.
While we can hope that the creatives have something good in store for the new championship, things do not look bright considering the talent that was involved after its unveiling and how WWE has booked second-string championships.
In this article, we will look at the three alternate championships which Mick Foley could have announced instead of the 24/7 Championship, and how they could have had a greater impact.
#3 A Six-Man Tag Team Championship
A Six-Man Tag Team Championship is a title in tag team wrestling held by 3 people and defended in a six-man tag team match.
The title has been seen on many different promotions around the world, but currently does not exist in the WWE. The best thing about the championship is that more teams can become champions, keeping in mind that there are many two-man teams and many multi-man teams in WWE today.
With the existence of factions such as The New Day, The Undisputed Era, The Lucha House Party, The Forgotten Sons, among others, the championship would give more tag teams to compete for a title and stay relevant.
With more and more superstars asking for their release from the company and stating that they are unhappy with their current position, a six-man tag team championship could keep more than two superstars happy at once.
With the wild-card rule in effect, a single championship could have been used for all the brands in WWE today.
#2 The Greatest Royal Rumble Belt
Last year, WWE staged their first ever pay-per-view event in Saudi Arabia under the name of The Greatest Royal Rumble. The 50-man match allowed only one winner who was awarded a trophy and a special green belt to show for their victory.
Braun Strowman was the inaugural winner, and fans were constantly wondering whether the Greatest Royal Rumble was only a one-time affair or would become a yearly pay-per-view just like the Royal Rumble.
While things aren’t entirely clear at the moment, it’s safe to say that it was a one-time thing as the new Super Show-Down pay-per-view will have a standard 50-man battle royal at the event.
Mick Foley could have announced a new championship for the Saudi Arabia event, making it exclusive to Saudi Arabian pay-per-views where it would be defended in various royal rumbles and battle royals during each event.
This would have increased the stakes of the matches which do not hold much value at the moment.
#1 The Legends Championship
Keeping in mind that the Saudi Arabian pay-per-view is just around the corner, this championship would have made the most sense considering the bookings made for the event.
We will witness the first-ever clash between Goldberg and The Undertaker at the event, and this championship could have done wonders for the event if it was introduced.
Saudi Arabia is constantly interested in superstars of yesterday, and the championship could have confirmed that we would have at least one Legends match each event.
The criteria of the championship would require the superstar to be at least 45-50 years of age, and therefore become a major jewel in WWE’s crown.
With Goldberg, The Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, Kane, Triple H, and even Kurt Angle often returning to compete in WWE, especially for overseas events, the Legends Championship could have turned out to be a valuable one.
