WWE Superstar Drew McIntyre was one step closer to winning the World Heavyweight Championship last week after he cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase during the title match between Seth Rollins and Damian Priest, which he had won earlier in the night.
However, CM Punk was there again to ensure that McIntyre didn't get the win. He interfered during the match, brutally attacking the Scottish Warrior, which allowed Priest to retain his title. The collateral damage in all of this was Seth Rollins.
Not only did he lose his chance to win the World Heavyweight Championship, but he also won't be able to challenge for the title as long as Priest is the champion. Rollins was frustrated by all of this and made his feelings clear during the latest episode of RAW. He confronted Punk and warned him that he would be coming after him once The Second City Saint was medically cleared, saying that "actions have consequences."
Following are four reasons why CM Punk should face Seth Rollins at SummerSlam.
#3. Drew McIntyre's suspension
Money in the Bank was an emotional night for Drew McIntyre after he unsuccessfully cashed in his MITB briefcase. However, things reached a boiling point during the post-show.
He let his frustration with Punk get the better of him as he attacked a couple of match officials before laying his hands on RAW General Manager Adam Pearce. As a result, McIntyre has been suspended indefinitely with no certain date for his return to action.
With McIntyre suspended, it's unclear what WWE has planned for SummerSlam next month. If CM Punk does get medically cleared but is unable to face McIntyre, Seth Rollins could be a brilliant option as Punk's opponent at SummerSlam.
#2. The original plans for Wrestlemania 40
In the recently released WWE documentary WrestleMania XL: Behind the Curtain, Triple H revealed that the original plans for The Grandest Stage of Them All included a match between Seth Rollins and CM Punk. Unfortunately, the latter's tricep injury during the Men's Royal Rumble match derailed those plans.
With Drew McIntyre out of the picture due to suspension, WWE could decide to revisit this match at SummerSlam. Given the intense personal animosity between Punk and Rollins, this bout has the potential to headline the entire show.
#1. WWE has bigger plans for Drew McIntyre and CM Punk
The Drew McIntyre-CM Punk rivalry intensifies with each passing week, and fans are eagerly waiting for their eventual clash. While many expect this match to happen at SummerSlam, WWE might have bigger plans.
Instead, the Triple H-led promotion could book a singles match between Punk and Seth Rollins at SummerSlam, with McIntyre making a shocking return to cost Punk the win.
This scenario aligns with Punk's comments about actions having consequences and allows WWE to build this rivalry further for a major PLE, such as the Royal Rumble or even WrestleMania 41.
