Gunther successfully defended his World Heavyweight Championship in the main event of the latest episode of Monday Night RAW after defeating Sami Zayn via submission. Zayn came close to dethroning The Ring General, but the latter stood tall and will now shift his attention to his bout with Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes for the Crown Jewel Championship.

Following his defeat, it is unclear what direction Sami Zayn will move to and whether he will have another title match or he will a have heel turn. As for the reigning World Heavyweight Champion, his booking might be already set for the months to come.

With that in mind, let's take a look at three reasons why The Ring General defeated The Underdog from the Underground and retained his World Heavyweight Championship.

#3. Gunther avenged his loss from WrestleMania XL

Gunther was the Intercontinental Champion for 666 days before Sami Zayn defeated him at WrestleMania XL and ended his title reign. Six months later, the two superstars re-ignited their feud, with Zayn attempting to defeat The Ring General again.

However, Gunther stood tall and avenged his loss from The Grandest Stage of Them All this year, which leaves the door open for their trilogy match in the future. For The Ring General, who is one of the top stars in the business, it would not have made much sense to lose both title matches to Sami Zayn.

#2. His match with Goldberg will not happen soon

Gunther teased a feud with Goldberg following their confrontation at Bad Blood 2024. The WWE legend was in attendance and even jumped the barricade following some embarrassing comments from the reigning World Heavyweight Champion.

However, WWE currently has no plans to have this match anytime soon, so it made sense for The Ring General to retain his championship.

Based on the segment at Bad Blood 2024, Goldberg's match against Gunther will most likely be the last in his wrestling career. The 57-year-old legend has revealed his intention to have a retirement match, so it is not likely it will happen as long as The Ring General is the World Heavyweight Champion.

A future premium live event, like Saturday Night's Main Event in December 2024, could be a great spot for a Gunther vs. Goldberg match, provided that the former will not be the champion at the time.

#1. Gunther vs. Cody Rhodes at Crown Jewel 2024 is a big-time match

Given the status of Gunther and Cody Rhodes, their championship match at Crown Jewel 2024 could be the main event of the show. Both are considered big-time stars in the business and their clash could attract more interest compared to a match between Sami Zayn and The American Nightmare.

The Ring General has done a great job as a heel, while Cody is the top babyface in WWE. On the other hand, Sami Zayn is a fan favorite in Saudi Arabia, but a match against The American Nightmare would make sense only if he had a heel turn.

On this occasion, their match could create new storylines, since Sami's best friend, Kevin Owens, who turned against Cody Rhodes at Bad Blood 2024, could interfere and assault the reigning Undisputed WWE Champion.
