Seth Rollins will be the special guest referee in the blockbuster match between Drew McIntyre and CM Punk, which will take place at SummerSlam on August 3. It was a surprising move from RAW GM Adam Pearce, just a few moments after he had made the Punk vs. McIntyre match official.
During his segment, the Best in the World revealed that he was medically cleared to compete and called The Scottish Warrior out. McIntyre appeared in the ring, but Pearce came right away and announced that the match between the two wrestlers would take place at SummerSlam.
Still, he prohibited any physical altercation and made it clear that if they engaged in a bout, the match would be off, and Punk and McIntyre would be suspended indefinitely.
As for Seth Rollins, he had the final say in the segment after revealing that he will be the special guest referee. Let's take a look at why WWE made that decision.
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
#3. It will ensure Seth Rollins will be at SummerSlam
It was unclear whether Seth Rollins would be at SummerSlam after his loss to Damian Priest in the World Heavyweight Championship match at Money in the Bank.
He was unable to challenge Priest to a rematch, as the reigning champion would take on King of the Ring Gunther at SummerSlam. Thus, the Architect had no direction and was up for his next challenge.
He's now inserted into the feud between Drew McIntyre and CM Punk. Still, WWE was not inclined to make it a Triple Threat Match, so making him the Special Guest Referee will let him become part of the rivalry and appear at SummerSlam.
#2. Seth Rollins will ensure there will be a winner in the match
Drew McIntyre and CM Punk are preparing for a war at SummerSlam, but there was a great chance this match would end in No Disqualification, or it might not even start.
So, adding a special guest referee in Seth Rollins will ensure that the match will actually start and we will have a winner.
#1. Seth Rollins will continue his rivalry with Drew McIntyre and CM Punk
Becoming the Special Guest Referee will help The Visionary keep his feud alive with both Drew McIntyre and CM Punk.
McIntyre and Rollins have had a feud for several months, which reached its peak at WrestleMania 40, where the Scottish Warrior defeated Rollins to become the new World Heavyweight Champion.
Similarly, Rollins and Punk re-ignited their rivalry after the latter's actions at Money in the Bank, and their feud is expected to reach its peak at WrestleMania 41 in April 2025.
Going forward, WWE is expected to proceed with Rollins becoming part of the rivalry between McIntyre and Punk, and SummerSlam is expected to add more fuel to the fire.
No matter what happens in Cleveland on August 3, we should expect the three megastars to collide in a Triple Threat Match at one of the coming Premium Live Events, like Bash in Berlin in late August.
