There has been a lot of tension within The New Day lately. A frustrated Xavier Woods has been teasing a heel turn following the faction's failures to reclaim the Tag Team Titles on RAW.
Heading into the 10th anniversary of one of the greatest tag teams of all time in WWE, it appears that a New Day split is closer than ever before. In this article, we take a look at three reasons why WWE Creative is working on this plan.
#3. The New Day are in search of a new direction
It has been quite a while since The New Day were the Tag Team Champions, especially after Big E's serious neck injury back in March 2022. Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston have tried to maintain the momentum, but have struggled lately.
The former champions have missed several chances to become Tag Team Champions on RAW and SmackDown, which is the main reason behind Xavier Woods' frustration.
With WWE Creative prioritizing other tag teams (Finn Balor & JD McDonagh, Motor City Machine Guns, Tama Tonga & Tonga Loa, and A-Town Down Under, to name a few) over The New Day, the latter is in search of a new direction. So, a split could be the best decision for the legendary faction.
#2. Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston will return to singles competition
It has been a decade since Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston had a singles run in WWE. Since the creation of The New Day, the two superstars have mostly been part of the Tag Team Division, with Big E having the most recent run in singles competition as the WWE Champion back in 2021.
Thus, a split would allow Woods and Kingston to re-enter singles competition and attempt to get title opportunities, possibly at a mid-card level, going after either the United States or Intercontinental championships.
Still, if they are to go their separate ways, the expectation is that Woods will turn on Kofi, and the two will start a feud that could last for weeks, or even months.
#1. A New Day split will open new angles for a Big E return
It has been nearly three years since Big E was an active wrestler in WWE. His last appearance was in mid-March 2022, with a serious neck and spinal injury keeping him out since then.
However, WWE has hinted at the former champion's return, even though it is unclear when and how it will happen. If he is cleared for an in-ring return, Big E could return as face and come to the aid of Kofi Kingston in his feud with Xavier Woods.
In that scenario, Big E and Kingston could keep The New Day alive, even without Woods. The other plan could see the former WWE Champion return during the faction's 10th-anniversary celebrations and help Woods and Kingston get back on the same page. However, this is unlikely as Xavier Woods has been teasing a heel turn for weeks.
Last but not least, he could return after The New Day split and become the special guest referee for a match between Woods and Kingston at WrestleMania 41.
