Cody Rhodes retained the Undisputed WWE Championship following his victory over Kevin Owens at Saturday Night's Main Event. But his win didn't come without a cost, as a post-match assault from KO led to a piledriver from the former World Champion to the American Nightmare, which has ruled him out indefinitely.

Ever since the reigning Undisputed WWE Champion came back to WWE in 2022, he has done a great job as a babyface, but it appears that it might be time for him to turn heel in WWE.

With that in mind, let's take a look at three signs that might suggest the American Nightmare will turn heel soon.

#3. He cheated to retain his title against Kevin Owens

Cody Rhodes had to survive a brutal match to retain his title, as he and Kevin Owens did their best to win. However, it appears that he eventually cheated to win the match since the referee was out of the ring when he made the three count. Additionally, Rhodes used a steel chair to put KO away.

Usually, this is something that happens in WWE when a heel gets the win. On the other hand, a babyface usually gets clean victories over their opponent. Thus, this could be a sign that the American Nightmare will turn heel sooner rather than later.

#2. WWE fans have started turning on Cody Rhodes

It is a fact that Cody Rhodes got a standing ovation from WWE fans once he finished his story and dethroned Roman Reigns. He was even called the face of the new era by Chief Content Officer Triple H.

Still, it appears that fans have started turning on him, with many even chanting Reigns' name. The Original Tribal Chief held the Universal Championship for nearly four years, and even though he was a heel, his segments were always must-see.

This is not the case with Cody Rhodes, though, and WWE's creative team could proceed with the heel turn part in order to add a new angle to his stint as champion.

#1. The reigning Undisputed Champion has already teased a heel turn

Despite being the top babyface for nearly three years, Cody Rhodes has already referred to a heel turn. He did so during a recent interview with WWE backstage reporter Cathy Kelley, where he hinted at a heel turn.

"If you poke me enough, the other side of political comes out, and that's just BAD for everybody. It's still in there," Cody Rhodes said.

Eight months after becoming a World Champion, the American Nightmare appears to have reached his breaking point amid a rivalry with Kevin Owens. Where and how he will have a heel turn remains to be seen, though. One scenario is that he will turn on his good friend Randy Orton once the latter returns to seek revenge on KO.

The other scenario is a rematch with Roman Reigns for the championship. Reigns has returned as a babyface and has made it clear he will go after Cody, so the latter could turn heel heading into his rematch with the Original Tribal Chief.
