Elias has shown time and time again that he can perform well in the ring. His match with John Cena was phenomenal and so are his segments.

His gimmick is already over with the fans, and it would be only worth it if WWE gives his career a push. They could have done the same at Extreme Rules by giving him a match with a credible performer, maybe like Apollo Crews. A feud between them would have helped both wrestlers, and WWE too.
