Monday Night Raw has been struggling for a while now, and Mr McMahon made an appearance to "shake things up".
Raw has not exactly been kind to call-ups from NXT, with the likes of Ember Moon and AOP most recently feeling the effect of this. Raw has also been missing some key names in the past few months. The Universal Champion is barely on the show, their biggest full-time star is out indefinitely, and their second biggest full-time star is still recovering from a nasty elbow injury.
However, other key acts missing are Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn, as both have had extended spells on the sidelines. The pair teamed up for the first time in WWE when Zayn helped Owens beat Shane McMahon at Hell in a Cell last year. Since then, they have been extremely entertaining, coming across as really dirty heels in the process.
While their feud with the SmackDown authority was needlessly drawn out, Owens and Zayn's quality did shine through.
During the Superstar Shake-up, the pair moved to Raw. However, both of them have done nothing since then. Zayn got injured in June, while Owens required double knee surgery a few months later.
WWE has aired separate return vignettes for both Owens and Zayn, but one might suspect the pair will be interlinked once again, especially considering they are both expected to return in February. They could yet play a part in WrestleMania.
Here are 3 possible things Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn could do upon their return.
#3 Get revenge on Bobby Lashley
The one common thing about Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn's injury layoffs is that they were both written off WWE programming following attacks from Bobby Lashley.
Zayn was manhandled by him in their match at Money in the Bank, the one following the terrible sisters segment, while Owens and Lashley seemed to have executed a double turn following The Dominator's post-match attack in October. Bobby Lashley is now a proper heel, with an annoying mouthpiece and manager in Lio Rush.
This opens the door for Owens and Zayn to return as babyfaces, a first for the Prizefighter since his NXT debut.
They could target Lashley and his cruiserweight buddy, in what could be a fun little program. They have the motivation to do so, and it would be a great way to reintroduce the charismatic pair back on Raw.
A tag team match at Fastlane would provide some much needed comeuppance for the frustrating heel duo. Also, wouldn't it be fun to see that pesky Lio Rush get beaten up by Owens and Zayn?
#2 Feud with each other
Following the return program with Lashley and Rush, both Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn would likely have similar paths to WrestleMania. Their careers have been intertwined forever, and it only makes sense to further their storyline.
Earlier this year, they both teased some tension heading into 'Mania, but ended up sticking together to face Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan. The rebels could go at it next year.
Both Owens and Zayn are no strangers to the shocking heel turn, either of them could pull it off.
They could play any role in WWE, and that makes them valuable members of the roster. The company could book a match between Owens and Zayn, and you wouldn't know who the face or heel is.
A reverse dynamic with Zayn playing the dastardly bad guy against the valiant Owens certainly springs a lot of intrigue to mind. Whatever the case is, a WrestleMania match between Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn would be a classic.
It has been a long time coming.
#1 Win the tag team titles
While the prospect of Owens vs Zayn at WrestleMania is extremely exciting, there might still be a lot of mileage left in them as a duo. The real-life best friends had been together from October until the build-up to Money in the Bank, but only as heels.
Owens and Zayn have an entire run as babyfaces to explore together, it would be something they would thrive at. A fully fledged tag team would also rescue the failing Raw tag team division, currently being kept somewhat alive by The Revival.
If the former NXT tag champs could win the Raw tag team championship, we could get a mouth-watering title match at WrestleMania, pitting The Revival against Owens and Zayn.
How great would that be?
If the pair of best friends do win the titles at 'Mania, it would be the ultimate full circle story. Their eternal history, partnership and rivalry, would make this moment so worth it.
It would also present Sami Zayn with his first main roster championship, while helping Kevin Owens become a Grand Slam champion.
Zayn & Owens should return together and win the Raw tag team championship, this would be the best case scenario.
