On the road to WrestleMania 20 in 2003-04, Evolution began having problems with WWE legend Mick Foley. Randy Orton was particularly not fond of Foley, and was determined to destroy him and add another name to his list of the legends that he "killed". Foley brought back The Rock to even the odds, and a 3-on-2 Handicap match was set for WrestleMania 20. At The Show of Shows, Orton hit a thunderous RKO out of nowhere on Foley and pinned him to win the match for Evolution.
The rivalry was far from over though. At Backlash 2004, Orton took on Foley's alter ego, Cactus Jack, in a Hardcore match for the Intercontinental title. Orton was on the receiving end of some serious beating in the match and was dropped on a pile of thumbtacks at one point, in a disturbing visual. Eventually, Orton defeated his nemesis and retained the title. Many fans regard this match as the moment that turned Randy Orton into a legit star.
