Current WWE Champion Kofi Kingston is set to defend his title against Dolph Ziggler at next week's Super ShowDown in Saudi Arabia, and presumably, unless Brock Lesnar successfully cashes in his Money in the Bank contract either after or during the match, Kingston will leave the show with his belt.
WWE's next pay-per-view will take place a little over two weeks after Super ShowDown, so the company doesn't have a ton of time to properly build to a brand new title match. However, it's unlikely that they'll go with Kingston vs. Ziggler again, especially if Kingston retains his title with a clean win.
So who on the SmackDown roster could be next in line for Kofi Kingston's WWE Championship after next week's Super ShowDown? Well, as of right now, there isn't really an obvious next contender, but one would assume that Vince McMahon has already picked out who will get the next title shot.
So here a few of SmackDown's finest who could get the next crack at Kofi Kingston.
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
#3 Roman Reigns
Even though Roman Reigns is being featured in a pretty big spot currently, as he's feuding with Shane McMahon, but it's probably pretty safe to say that the former Universal Champion probably should be put into the title picture as soon as possible.
Sure, it's probably not something that the fans are dying to see, but the reality is that he never lost the Universal Championship, so it only makes sense for him to go after his current brand's top prize, which is the WWE Championship.
Putting Roman Reigns against Kofi Kingston would probably result in the ex-Shield member getting booed, but that's nothing new. He's still probably their most significant star, which means that he should almost always be in the title picture, regardless of which brand he's on.
#2 Elias
WWE has obviously been very high on Elias ever since he made his debut on the main roster, and even though his musical act always seems to get over with the fans, he's still one of the best heels on the current roster, and probably should get a title shot at some point in the near future.
An Elias vs. Kofi Kingston/New Day feud would probably be pretty entertaining if done right, and who knows? Maybe WWE will end up putting the belt on Elias if they end up doing this match after Super ShowDown.
Regardless, as long as Kofi Kingston is WWE Champion, he'll need an effective heel to work with, and Elias is one of the few effective heels that the company has. Sure, he might not be the greatest in-ring technician, but he always seems to get a big reaction from the crowd, so he'd be a great opponent for the current WWE Champ.
#1 Big E
On last week's edition of SmackDown Live, Big E made his return from injury. However, the return was short-lived, as he was attacked backstage by Kevin Owens.
As of this writing, Big E isn't cleared for an in-ring return, which is why he was taken out by Owens during last week's show. We don't know how much longer he'll be out of action, but if he's able to return sometime soon, it's quite possible that a heel turn could be in the works.
The New Day has been together for over four years at this point, so it could be time to finally split the trio up. So, whenever he is cleared to return from injury, we could see Big E turn against his longtime buddy Kofi Kingston, and be granted the next shot at the WWE Championship.
WWE was reportedly really high on Big E when they brought him up to the main roster, so they might go all the way with him, which would mean a WWE Championship win if they turn him heel.
