Roman Reigns went on a hiatus from WWE due to leukaemia, but he still had an astonishing year. Reigns was undeniably the face of the company before he declared his hiatus on the 22nd October episode of Raw. He was the Universal champion, and he was supposed to defend the title against Lesnar and Strowman at Crown Jewel.

The Big Dog was the Intercontinental champion at the start of this year. He lost the title against The Miz on the 25th anniversary of Raw. He came close to win the Royal Rumble match, but he was the last man to be eliminated by the winner Nakamura. He faced Brock Lesnar at Wrestlemania 34 and he headlined the show, but he could not win the Universal title. He met Lesnar at Greatest Royal Rumble but controversially lost the match.

Subsequently, Reigns had a small feud with Bobby Lashley. He defeated Lashley to earn a title shot against Brock Lesnar. Hence, Reigns faced Lesnar at Summerslam where he pinned Lesnar and became the Universal champion. As a matter of fact, Lesnar's title reign lasted 504 days. Reigns defended his Universal title a couple of times before he relinquished the title.
