4 biggest mistakes made by WWE in 2024

The year 2024 has, by most metrics, been one of the best in WWE history. The Stamford-based promotion is firing on all cylinders, setting multiple attendance records, crafting highly acclaimed storylines, and much more. Many, including Chief Content Officer Triple H and Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes, argue that this is the greatest era in the company's history, and they may be right.

However, even in the biggest of booms, the product can never be perfect, and mistakes are definitely made. Though 2024 has been successful for the Sports Entertainment juggernaut, there have been some missteps The Game should be looking to rectify in 2025. These imperfections have not had a radical impact on the company's bottom line but could, should they continue, hurt it in the long term.

Here are four of the biggest mistakes WWE has made in 2024:

#4. WWE has dropped the ball on some of the most promising angles of 2024

One of the most consistently praised aspects of the Triple H era of WWE has been the improvement in storytelling compared to the previous regime. Under The Game's creative leadership, the Stamford-based promotion has become more focused on intricate long-term storylines, making sure even the smallest details build up to future payoffs. As a result, almost every angle on the card feels important.

However, several stories in 2024 have shown a great deal of promise only to suddenly go cold. The biggest example of this has been Chad Gable's breakup with the Alpha Academy, arguably the hottest thing on RAW at the beginning of June. However, the company pivoted and booked the Olympian and his new stable (American Made) in a feud with the debuting Wyatt Sicks, leaving Otis, Akira Tozawa, and Maxxine Dupri floundering.

Many fans feel that the company missed a golden opportunity to capitalize on the feud between the American Made leader and his former "Number One Guy." Come 2025, such abrupt storyline endings must be avoided.

#3. WWE's booking of the men's tag team division has left a lot to be desired

WWE's singles main event and mid-card scenes have been on fire in 2024. From Cody Rhodes finishing his story and Sami Zayn dethroning Gunther to Jey Uso, Bron Breakker, and LA Knight winning their first singles gold on the main roster, there have been many memorable moments. However, it's difficult to argue that the tag team division has been as hot.

While the women's tag division has arguably grown due to Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill's hard work and star power, the men's divisions have been unspectacular. Unlike the women's title, which has been defended six times on PLEs in 2024, their men's counterparts have only featured twice, and not once since WrestleMania XL.

Come 2025, the men's tag team titles need to be given a bigger spotlight, especially given the amount of talented teams currently on both brands.

#2. Poorly planned NXT call-ups have been a dark spot in WWE's efforts in 2024

After the drama of WrestleMania XL, the 2024 WWE Draft was met with great excitement, with huge shakeups expected. Fans were especially excited for the NXT call-ups, with stars such as Lyra Valkyria and Ilja Dragunov getting the nod. While Valkyria, Dragunov, and earlier call-ups like Bron Breakker have had varied levels of success on the main roster, many more have floundered.

Stars like Blair Davenport and Kiana James have only appeared sporadically, not getting any time to establish momentum. Others like Baron Corbin and Dijak were released after barely getting a chance, if at all. These poorly handled callups were one of the biggest letdowns of 2024.

#1. WWE's biggest mistake of 2024 birthed the year's biggest storyline

The year 2024 featured one of the most chaotic and entertaining Roads to WrestleMania in the promotion's history. At the center of this wild buildup to The Show of Shows was the Cody Rhodes vs. Bloodline saga, which headlined both nights in Philadelphia. The American Nightmare won the Men's Royal Rumble, only to briefly step aside for The Rock, who returned with the intention of facing Roman Reigns at 'Mania.

This proved to be a massive mistake, with the segment generating over 600,000 dislikes on YouTube and prompting the #WeWantCody movement. However, it's a testament to all involved that the company managed to pivot and create arguably its best storyline of the year. However, this was a very special turn of events, and a similar mistake in 2025 could seriously derail one or more top storylines.
