July was a key month for WWE, as several major events took place. Extreme Rules was held that month and was a brilliant pay-per-view. Moreover, some titles also changed hands last month.
The company has certainly improved the product, and it was visible over the course of last month. While the rise of AEW probably forced WWE to step up their game, the substandard ratings also played a big role. Paul Heyman and Eric Bischoff, the new Executive Directors of RAW and SmackDown Live respectively, were appointed to those roles last month. The RAW Reunion episode, certainly one of the biggest episodes of the year, took place in July, as well.
The expectations, then, will be sky-high in August. SummerSlam is the second biggest pay-per-view after WrestleMania and it will take place in less than two weeks. WWE has hyped the show with several gigantic matches. The Red Brand and the Blue Brand will be aiming to continue the momentum this month.
Here we discuss four things WWE could be planning in August.
#4 Goldberg faces Dolph Ziggler
Dolph Ziggler has garnered the attention of the WWE Universe in recent weeks. The Show-off had a disastrous match at Extreme Rules where Kevin Owens pinned him in seventeen seconds. Ziggler appeared on The Miz TV and started a new feud with the A-Lister. The match was confirmed on SmackDown Live this week and the two men are set to collide at SummerSlam.
Though the match between The Miz and Ziggler was confirmed this week, we might see a twist. It is no secret that Ziggler has been taking shots at Goldberg every week. As a matter of fact, Ziggler continued it this week.
A new report suggests that Goldberg could face Dolph Ziggler at the Biggest Party of the Summer. Following a dismal performance at Super ShowDown, the former Universal Champion will be aiming to prove his doubters wrong. Considering Ziggler is an exceptional performer, he could deliver a great match against Goldberg at SummerSlam.
#3 The Fiend squashes Finn Balor
Bray Wyatt has taken WWE by storm after making his in-ring return. The former WWE Champion attacked Finn Balor on the RAW after Extreme Rules. Furthermore, he also took out Mick Foley at RAW Reunion. In all honesty, The Fiend will terrorize WWE for a long time.
The leader of the Balor Club challenged The Fiend for a match at SummerSlam and the latter accepted it on SmackDown Live last week. The Fiend continued to play his mind games this week as a distraction helped Ziggler to pin Balor.
While Bray Wyatt's alter ego is impressive, Balor also has an alter-ego. The Demon Balor is still unbeaten on the main roster but he is unlikely to face The Fiend at the Biggest Party of the Summer. Moreover, the Demon Balor is not advertised to face Bray Wyatt after the match was confirmed last week.
Considering Balor will be the first opponent for The Fiend, the latter will be aiming to make a strong statement by squashing the former. Judging by the build-up of Wyatt's new character, WWE has big plans for him. Hence, a dominating victory over the former Universal Champion could be an ideal start.
#2 Lacey Evans costs Charlotte Flair the SummerSlam match and starts a new rivalry
Charlotte Flair has a new opponent at SummerSlam. Though Trish Stratus skipped RAW Reunion, she was the special guest on SmackDown Live this week. The seven-time women's champion was confronted by Charlotte Flair. After a heated segment between the two women, Charlotte challenged Trish for a match at the Biggest Party of the Summer. Being a fierce competitor, Trish accepted the challenge.
There is no denying that it is a dream match as the two women share sixteen women's titles between them. Considering the dexterity of the two Superstars in the ring, it is expected to be a stupendous match but we could see a twist.
Lacey Evans hasn't been on TV after the Mixed Tag Team Match at Extreme Rules. However, it will not be surprising if the Sassy Southern Belle makes her return at SummerSlam. Even though Evans and Charlotte had a short alliance, it didn't last long. As a matter of fact, the two Superstars subsequently faced each other but WWE didn't renew the rivalry.
Evans could restart the rivalry if she costs Charlotte the match against Trish Stratus at SummerSlam. Moreover, the Queen could be protected as it wouldn't be a clean loss. Considering Trish is unlikely to continue after SummerSlam, an exciting feud could start between the Queen and the Sassy Southern Belle.
#1 Drew McIntyre starts a new feud with Brock Lesnar
The Universal Championship match is set for SummerSlam as Brock Lesnar will take on Seth Rollins. The Beast Incarnate had a memorable night at Extreme Rules where he cashed in the Money in the Bank contract to win the most coveted prize of the Red Brand.
Although Rollins didn't get an automatic rematch, he won a ten-man Battle Royal Match to become the number one contender for Lesnar.
Lesnar has been in the Universal Title picture for a long time. While his first title reign lasted 504 days, his second run lasted six months, therefore, the Universal Champion is unlikely to lose the belt in his first title defence.
Since Rollins and Lesnar have been tussling for a long time, they are not expected to renew their rivalry after SummerSlam.
Drew McIntyre, who is certainly one of the top guys of the company, could be the next challenger for Lesnar. Since the Scottish Psychopath made his main roster return last year, he has been awe-inspiring.
McIntyre is competent enough to go toe-to-toe with Lesnar and he has all the attributes to become the next Universal Champion. Due to his impressive mic skills and dexterity in the ring, he could deliver an excellent feud with the Beast Incarnate.
