4 reasons why DIY turned heel and won the WWE Tag Team Titles on SmackDown

The dynamics in SmackDown

After weeks of frustration, DIY shocked the world by completing a heel turn and winning the WWE Tag Team Titles from the Motor City Machine Guns on SmackDown. They were not even listed for a title match on tonight's show.

The Street Profits were the latest victims of a backstage assault. The opening allowed Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa to step in and challenge Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin for the titles.

While it appeared as if Gargano and Ciampa weren't on the same page, the plan became clear after Johnny Wrestling hit Sabin with a low blow.

After a Meet in the Middle, DIY became two-time WWE Tag Team Champs. The big heel turn and title change likely occurred for the next four reasons.

#4. It can set up a heated rematch for WWE Saturday Night's Main Event

SmackDown came and went without any other matches added to the upcoming WWE Saturday Night's Main Event. As things currently sit, the show only has four matches currently booked.

Cody Rhodes and Gunther defend their titles against Kevin Owens and Finn Balor respectively. Liv Morgan will put the Women's World Championship on the line against IYO SKY.

The Women's US Title tournament finals will also take place at the event. With the way things went down on SmackDown, a rematch between DIY and the Motor City Machine Guns seems like a perfect addition.

The dynamics just greatly shifted and isn't a random pairing. Each team has a win over the other and a rubber match could end the rivalry at WWE Saturday Night's Main Event.

#3. Johnny Gargano can brag about outsmarting his mentor

A huge aspect of the ongoing tension between DIY and Shelley and Sabin is Gargano's relationship with Shelley. Johnny Wrestling considers Shelley his mentor. He didn't want to disrespect or step on his toes since he just joined WWE.

Ciampa didn't have the same relationship and had no problem doing whatever was needed to reclaim the gold. The phrase "the student becomes the teacher" could be used since both men have been heels and faces during their careers.

By outsmarting the person who taught him the fine art of pro wrestling, Gargano can be smarmy and indignant by claiming he's craftier than Shelley. It will help sell the heel turn even more.

#2. The changes shake things up before the end of the year

DIY, the Motor City Machine Guns, and Street Profits have been circling the tag team titles for the last three months. DIY has done so for the second half of 2024. Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins are always in the tag team title scene.

While the Street Profits could have used a heel turn more than DIY, WWE pulled the trigger with Ciampa and Gargano. It has seemingly shifted the dynamics in the division greatly before the end of 2024.

It may also lead to a different team - from RAW or SmackDown - to fill the face void left by DIY's turn. The "Transfer Window" gimmick was announced on SmackDown, so this move could be one of the first dominoes to fall.

#1. It cements DIY heel turn

Ciampa was already acting like a heel on SmackDown. He didn't care about anyone's feelings and was adamant that if Gargano cared, he'd need to follow suit.

He squashed Pretty Deadly by himself and provided the blueprint for Johnny Wrestling to do the same. With Tonga Loa's injury, a void was left in the tag team division.

Gargano has been a face on the main roster, so turning on his mentor and celebrating with his heel wife makes the villainous turn official.

It may have been more effective in the main event slot, but there's no doubt that DIY will do whatever they want to win and keep the WWE Tag Team Titles.
