WWE Elimination Chamber began with history being made as 12 WWE Superstars competed to win the first ever WWE Women's tag-team championship. The match went down to the wire with Sonya Deville and Mandy Rose and the team of Sasha and Bayley were the last women standing.
For a few seconds, it looked like Deville and Rose would pull off the upset. Rose hit Banks with her finisher but The Boss kicked out at the last second. Sasha then sidestepped a Spear from Deville who took out her own teammate by mistake.
The Boss used her experience to her advantage and quickly locking in a modified version of the Banks Statement, getting Deville to tap out and win the titles for her team,
In this article we look at why WWE went with Sasha Banks and Bayley as the first WWE Women's Tag-Team Champions:
#4 Out of the title picture for too long
Both Sasha Banks and Bayley have been out of the singles titles picture for most of 2018. This changed for Banks when she challenged Ronda Rousey for the RAW Women's Championship at the Royal Rumble (more on that later), that seemed more like a one-off for now than the norm.
Sasha Banks is a former 4-time RAW Women's Champion and Bayley is a former holder of the title two.
Banks and Bayley are top tier talent and the only reason they haven't been given a spotlight as singles stars in the last year is because of how deep WWE's women's division is right now, and heading into WrestleMania 35, the RAW women's division is even more crowded than usual. Instead, Sasha and Bayley get to spearhead the women's tag division.
#3 The Royal Rumble proved how popular Sasha Banks is
Just how popular is Sasha Banks amongst the WWE Universe? After her incredible performance against Ronda Rousey at the 2019 WWE Royal Rumble, she effectively helped turn a section of WWE's most hardcore fans against Ronda Rousey as was evident at how Rousey was booed on the RAW after the Rumble.
Yes, the Becky Lynch effect played a part in Rousey getting booed too, but her match against Sasha Banks was a major factor too.
#2 WWE needed the best team to win it
Of all the teams inside the Elimination Chamber, there's no doubt that Sasha and Bayley were both the most popular and had the most pedigree. They have 5 RAW Women's Championships between them as well as 2 NXT Women's Championships.
Having the most decorated team win the first WWE women's tag-team championships will only help cement the titles as important.
#1 Sets up a dream Mania match
Apart from the aforementioned reasons, Sasha Banks and Bayley winning the women's Tag-Team Championships also achieves something else. WWE now have the chance to set up a dream tag-team match at WrestleMania - Sasha Banks and Bayley versus Trish Stratus and Lita.
Yes, I hear the argument that with Trish and Lita being part-timers, it would be a little obvious that Sasha and Bayley are retaining the titles. However, that doesn't mean that this isn't a dream match in its own right or the fact that it will probably be incredible.
We all knew Brock Lesnar would be beating Goldberg at WrestleMania 33 when they wrestled for the WWE Universal Championship but that match was still an exciting hard-hitting match and it was easy for fans including myself to suspend our disbelief.
WWE needs to book Sasha and Bayley versus Trish and Lita at Mania. It's the highest profile match they can book for the women's Tag-Team Championships.
