The Hardcore title, originally introduced by Vince McMahon as a present to Mankind became a defining mid-card title for the WWE during its legendary Attitude Era. The title was originally intended to be defended in hardcore matches, or Extreme Rules as it is referred to today.

However, when Crash Holly won the belt on a SmackDown episode, he declared the belt would be defended 24/7. As a result of the rule change, the belt would change several times during the event.

The first female to hold the title was Cynthia Lynch, who was one of The Godfather's Ho's at the event. Lynch managed to pin Crash Holly for the title, before being pinned by Holly to return the title. Molly Holly, as Mighty Molly, would knock out the Hurricane with a frying pan to win the title before she was pinned by Christian.

Trish Stratus would also pin Crash Holly to win the title at a Raw event in Hartford, Connecticut. Finally, Terri pinned Stevie Richards after Richards was attacked by Jaqueline, Shawn Stasiak, and the Big Boss Man.

Female Champions: Cynthia Lynch, Trish Stratus, Terri Runnels, Molly Holly
