Shelton Benjamin is a fantastic example of a wrestler falling short of fulfilling his true potential. His amateur wrestling background and athleticism made him one of the best in-ring performers at the time. He had a number of great Intercontinental Championship reigns, but he could never break into the main event title scene.

His chances of being in the main event ended with the Mamma Benjamin storyline. The WWE hired an actress to play Shelton's mother and try to motivate him after a series of losses. She would slap him and scream in his face every time he lost a match.The storyline wasn't all bad and fans actually enjoyed Mamma Benjamin's backstage skits.

The main problem was that it took away from Shelton's spotlight and slowed him down. Momma was written off TV after faking a heart attack during Shelton's match with Ric Flair. The "Heart Attack" distracted Flair and Shelton beat him to regain the Intercontinental Championship. Shelton explained that Momma was undergoing heart surgery and Ric Flair was responsible for causing it. She never appeared on TV again.
