Jinder Mahal was WWE Champion heading into Survivor Series in 2017, where he was originally scheduled to face Brock Lesnar.
Just days before the show, Mahal dropped the championship to AJ Styles, and instead, it was The Phenomenal One who went on to wrestle Lesnar at the event.

According to a recent report by Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer, this was because Brock Lesnar refused to wrestle Jinder Mahal as part of the show so the company was forced to make a late change.
"You know why they did that? Because Brock did not want to work with him [Jinder Mahal]."
Mahal was in the middle of a huge push in the company at the time, something that he hasn't been able to replicate in the five years since his defeat to Styles.
Brock Lesnar on the other hand, was able to defeat AJ Styles at Survivor Series and has since remained one of WWE's biggest stars, including being the reigning WWE Champion heading into this year's Royal Rumble.
